The framework, tools, and metrics Sentic uses to win AI visibility. **Content:** **Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content, data, and brand signals so AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Overviews can find your information, trust it, and cite it in the answers they generate.** Traditional SEO earns a position in a list of links. AEO earns a place inside the answer itself. That distinction now decides who gets seen. When an AI summary appears, people click fewer links, and the few sources the answer cites collect most of the attention. This guide covers what AEO is, how it differs from SEO, how answer engines choose their sources, and the four-step framework Sentic uses to get brands cited. ## What is answer engine optimization (AEO)? Answer engine optimization is the work of making your brand the source an AI system relies on when it answers a question in your category. It combines technical access (can the AI crawl and parse your pages?), content structure (can it lift a clean answer from them?), and authority (does it trust you enough to name you?). New to the vocabulary? Our [AI search glossary](https://sentic.io/blog/ai-search-glossary/) defines 42 AEO, GEO, and AI search terms in plain language. ### What does AEO stand for? AEO stands for answer engine optimization. An “answer engine” is any search product that responds to a question with a written answer instead of, or on top of, a list of links. ### What counts as an answer engine? - **Google AI Overviews and AI Mode:** AI-generated summaries inside Google Search, with links to supporting pages. - **ChatGPT search:** OpenAI’s search feature, which retrieves live web results and cites them. - **Perplexity:** an answer engine built around cited sources. - **Gemini:** Google’s assistant, which can ground answers in Google Search. - **Microsoft Copilot:** Microsoft’s assistant, grounded in Bing search results. - **Voice assistants:** Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant, which read a single answer aloud. ### AEO, GEO, LLM SEO, and AI SEO: same goal, different names You will see several labels for the same discipline. **Generative engine optimization (GEO)** emphasizes generative AI tools like ChatGPT. **LLM SEO** and **LLM optimization** focus on large language models. **AI SEO** and **AI search optimization** are the broadest terms. The goal behind all of them is identical: be the brand the AI cites and recommends. This guide uses AEO throughout. ## Why AEO matters now AEO matters because a growing share of discovery happens inside AI answers, and those answers send far fewer clicks than a page of blue links. If your brand is not one of the cited sources, you are invisible at the moment the buyer forms an opinion. ### Visibility is moving to zero-click In February 2024, [Gartner predicted](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2024-02-19-gartner-predicts-search-engine-volume-will-drop-25-percent-by-2026-due-to-ai-chatbots-and-other-virtual-agents) that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 as AI chatbots and virtual agents take share. The click data already points that way. In a [Pew Research Center study](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/) of 68,879 Google searches by 900 U.S. adults in March 2025, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when it did not. They clicked a link inside the AI summary on just 1% of visits. ### From keywords to intent Traditional search matches keywords. AI search matches intent. A buyer no longer types “SEO agency”; they ask “which agency is best for SEO for a senior living community with three locations?” AEO makes sure your brand is the answer to those longer, more specific, higher-intent questions. ### The winner-takes-all dynamic On a results page, position four still earns clicks. In an AI answer, only a handful of sources are cited, and often just one brand is recommended. Being the clear authority on a topic is worth far more than being one of ten links on page one. ### Brand protection If you don’t define your brand for AI systems, they will fill the gaps with third-party reviews, outdated pages, or guesses. AEO works like digital PR for machines: it makes sure the model has accurate information about your services, pricing, and reputation. ## Search demand for AEO is growing fast Buyers are actively researching this shift. Sentic pulled U.S. monthly search volume from SE Ranking for the core AEO terms, comparing November 2025 with October 2026: | Search term | Nov 2025 | Oct 2026 | Change | |---|---|---|---| | ai seo | 810 | 6,600 | 8.1x | | generative engine optimization | 70 | 3,600 | 51x | | what is aeo | 160 | 2,400 | 15x | | answer engine optimization | 470 | 1,900 | 4x | | ai search optimization | 390 | 990 | 2.5x | *Source: SE Ranking keyword data, U.S. database, monthly search volume. Pulled October 2026.* Every term grew at least 2.5x in a year. Marketers are moving budget toward AI visibility, and the brands that build authority early will be the ones AI systems already trust when competitors arrive. ## AEO vs SEO: what’s different and what stays the same AEO builds on SEO; it does not replace it. SEO earns rankings in a list of links. AEO earns citations and mentions inside AI-generated answers. Most of the foundations are shared, but the unit of success, the content format, and the measurement all change. For the full side-by-side breakdown, read [AEO vs SEO](https://sentic.io/blog/aeo-vs-seo/). | | SEO | AEO | |---|---|---| | **Goal** | Rank on the results page | Be cited or recommended in the answer | | **Unit of success** | Position and clicks | Citations, brand mentions, share of voice | | **Query type** | Short keywords | Long, conversational questions | | **Content format** | Full pages optimized for a keyword | Self-contained answer passages, lists, and tables an AI can lift | | **Authority signals** | Backlinks, relevance, page experience | Backlinks plus brand mentions, reviews, and consistent entity data across the web | | **Measurement** | Rank tracking, Search Console, organic sessions | Prompt tracking across AI engines, citation frequency, AI referral traffic | ### Why good SEO is still the foundation of AEO Google states in its documentation on [AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. In other words, if Google can’t crawl, index, and trust your page, no amount of AEO formatting will get it cited. Strong [technical SEO and content](https://sentic.io/seo/) come first; AEO is the layer that makes that content easy for AI to quote. ## How answer engines choose what to cite Most answer engines retrieve live web content, then have a language model write an answer grounded in what they retrieved. Your content gets cited when it is retrievable, relevant to the specific question, easy to extract, and from a source the system trusts. ### Retrieval-augmented generation in plain English Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) works in two stages. First, the system searches an index for pages related to the question. Second, the language model reads the best passages and writes an answer, citing the pages it drew from. Google describes a version of this called “query fan-out,” where AI Overviews and AI Mode run multiple related searches across subtopics to assemble a response. That means your page can be pulled in for a sub-question even when it doesn’t rank for the main query. ### The signals that matter - **Crawl access:** AI crawlers must be allowed in robots.txt. For example, OpenAI’s [crawler documentation](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) states that sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Blocking GPTBot is a separate choice that only affects model training. - **Indexing:** Google’s AI features draw on Google’s index. Copilot is grounded in Bing. Being indexed in both is the baseline. - **Extractable structure:** clear headings, direct answers, lists, and tables give the model clean passages to quote. - **Authority and consensus:** models favor sources that other trusted sites reference and that agree with the broader body of evidence. - **Freshness:** current, dated content wins on time-sensitive questions. ## The Sentic AEO framework: 4 steps to get cited Sentic’s framework has four steps: make your content easy to retrieve, add information AI can’t find elsewhere, build brand authority across the web, and measure your share of AI answers. Each step builds on the one before it. ### Step 1: Make your content easy to retrieve and quote Structure every important page so an AI system can lift a correct answer in one pass. - **Lead with the answer.** Use the BLUF method (bottom line up front): open each section with a direct, 40 to 60 word answer to the question in its heading, then expand. - **Write headings as questions** that match how people ask, such as “How much does AEO cost?” - **Use lists and tables** for steps, comparisons, and criteria. They are easier for models to parse than dense paragraphs. - **Add structured data.** Use [Schema.org](https://schema.org/) markup for your Organization, articles, products, and FAQs, and keep it consistent with the visible text on the page. - **Keep pages fast and crawlable.** Important content should be in the HTML, not hidden behind scripts, tabs, or logins. ### Step 2: Add information gain and E-E-A-T AI systems have already read the generic version of your article a thousand times. To get cited, give them something new. - **Information gain:** publish original data, proprietary benchmarks, expert quotes, or a clear point of view. A unique statistic is one of the most citable assets a page can have. - **Experience and expertise:** name real authors with real credentials and link to their profiles. Google’s guidance on [creating helpful, reliable, people-first content](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content) lays out the experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trust (E-E-A-T) signals that matter. - **Cite your sources.** Link every outside statistic to its primary source. It builds trust with readers and models alike. ### Step 3: Build brand authority and co-occurrence Language models learn associations from words that appear together across the web. If your brand name keeps appearing next to your category on trusted sites, models learn that you belong in that answer. - **Earn mentions as well as links.** Digital PR, guest expertise, podcasts, and inclusion in “best of” roundups on authoritative publications all build co-occurrence. - **Own your entity.** Keep your company description, services, and details identical across your website, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, [Wikidata](https://www.wikidata.org/), review sites, and Google Business Profile where you have one. These are seed sources AI systems use to verify facts about a company. - **Collect reviews** on the platforms buyers and AI tools check for your industry, such as G2 and Clutch for agencies and software, or Google reviews for local businesses. ### Step 4: Measure your share of the model Traditional rank tracking doesn’t show whether AI answers mention you. Instead, track a fixed set of buyer questions across AI engines and measure how often your brand appears, how it’s described, and how you compare with competitors. The next section covers the metrics. ## AEO best practices checklist Use this checklist to audit any site for AI search readiness: 1. Allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot in robots.txt. 2. Confirm key pages are indexed in both Google Search Console and [Bing Webmaster Tools](https://www.bing.com/webmasters). 3. Submit an XML sitemap to both, and use [IndexNow](https://www.indexnow.org/) to notify Bing and other participating engines when content changes. 4. Add Organization schema with your logo, description, and every official profile as `sameAs`. 5. Add Article schema with a named author to every blog post. 6. Open every key page and section with a direct answer of 40 to 60 words. 7. Rewrite headings as the questions buyers actually ask. 8. Turn comparisons into tables and processes into numbered lists. 9. Publish at least one piece of original data or research per quarter. 10. Give every article a named author with a bio and credentials. 11. Link every outside statistic to its primary source. 12. Show a visible “last updated” date and keep key pages current. 13. Use one consistent company description across your site and profiles. 14. Build a comparison or “versus” page for each major alternative buyers consider. 15. Answer pricing and timeline questions on your site so AI doesn’t guess. 16. Earn mentions on the publications and review sites your buyers read. 17. Track a fixed prompt set across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews every month. 18. Segment AI referral traffic in GA4 so you can tie AI visibility to leads. ## Answer engine optimization tools AEO tools fall into two groups: tools that measure your visibility in AI answers, and tools that help AI systems access and understand your site. Most teams need one from each. ### AI visibility tracking - **SE Ranking AI Search:** tracks brand mentions and citations across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, alongside traditional rankings. - **Profound:** a dedicated AI visibility platform focused on enterprise brands. - **Cairrot:** tracks citations and brand visibility across AI search engines. - **Manual prompt testing:** a spreadsheet of 20 to 50 buyer questions, run monthly in each engine, is a valid starting point for smaller budgets. ### Technical AEO tools - **Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools:** confirm indexing, which is the prerequisite for every AI feature. - **An SEO plugin with schema support,** such as All in One SEO or Yoast on WordPress, to manage structured data and sitemaps. - **Schema validators:** Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator to check markup. - **llms.txt:** a Markdown file at your site’s root that gives language models a curated summary of your key pages. [Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed it](https://www.answer.ai/posts/2024-09-03-llmstxt.html) in September 2024. It is cheap to add, but treat it as optional: major AI search providers have not publicly confirmed they rely on it. ## How to measure AEO results Measure AEO with citation frequency, brand mention rate, and share of voice across a fixed set of prompts, plus AI referral traffic and leads in your analytics. Rankings alone will not tell you whether AI recommends you. Track mentions and citations separately. In our [State of AI Visibility study](/blog/state-of-ai-visibility-2026/) of 55 US brands, many brands led on one measure and trailed on the other. ### The metrics that matter | Metric | What it tells you | Where to get it | |---|---|---| | Citation frequency | How often AI answers link to your pages | AI visibility tools, manual prompt tests | | Brand mention rate | Share of tracked prompts where your brand is named | AI visibility tools | | Share of voice | Your mentions compared with competitors on the same prompts | AI visibility tools | | Sentiment and accuracy | Whether AI describes you correctly and positively | Manual review of answers | | AI referral traffic | Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com | GA4 traffic acquisition, filtered by source | | Leads from AI referrals | Whether AI visibility turns into pipeline | GA4 key events, CRM source fields | ### How to set up AI referral tracking in GA4 In GA4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and filter session source for AI domains such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. For ongoing reporting, create a custom channel group called “AI Search” that matches those sources, so AI traffic and its conversions sit alongside organic and paid. Sentic’s [analytics team](https://sentic.io/data-analytics/) can set this up for you. ## Common AEO mistakes to avoid Most AEO failures come from blocking AI systems by accident, burying the answer, or publishing content that adds nothing new. - **Blocking AI crawlers without meaning to.** Security plugins, CDN bot rules, and copied robots.txt templates often block OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. Check your robots.txt and firewall rules before anything else. - **Treating AEO as a separate project from SEO.** Pages that aren’t indexed or don’t rank rarely get cited. Fix crawl, indexing, and site speed first. - **Burying the answer.** A 300-word introduction before the point gives an AI system nothing to quote. Put the answer in the first two sentences of the section. - **Publishing generic content at scale.** AI models already know the consensus view. Fifty rewritten articles add less than one page of original data. - **Schema that contradicts the page.** Google says structured data should match the visible text. Markup that claims things the page doesn’t show erodes trust. - **Inconsistent company information.** Different descriptions, services, or addresses across your site and profiles make it harder for AI systems to verify who you are. - **Measuring only rankings.** You can hold position one and still be absent from the AI answer above it. Track AI mentions and citations directly. ## How long does AEO take to work? Technical fixes such as unblocking AI crawlers, fixing indexing, and adding schema can show up in AI answers within weeks, as soon as pages are recrawled. Authority-driven gains from original content, mentions, and reviews usually take three to six months to compound. Because many AI systems retrieve live content, AEO often moves faster than traditional SEO for well-structured pages on sites that already rank. ## AEO by industry The framework is the same everywhere, but the questions buyers ask AI differ by industry. - **[Senior living](https://sentic.io/industries/senior-living/):** families ask AI to compare communities, levels of care, and costs. Clear pricing ranges, care-level explanations, and review volume decide who gets recommended. - **[Hospitality](https://sentic.io/industries/hospitality/):** travelers ask for hotel recommendations by neighborhood and trip type. Consistent property data, reviews, and location content drive inclusion. - **[Ecommerce](https://sentic.io/industries/ecommerce/):** shoppers ask for product comparisons and “best for” picks. Product schema, detailed specs, and third-party reviews matter most. - **[B2B SaaS](https://sentic.io/industries/b2b-saas/):** buyers ask for shortlists and alternatives. Comparison pages, G2 presence, and analyst or media mentions carry the weight. - **[Healthcare](https://sentic.io/industries/healthcare/):** patients ask about conditions, treatments, and providers. Expert authorship, medical review, and accurate provider data are essential. AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the practice of optimizing your content and brand signals so AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews cite and recommend you in their answers. ### Is AEO replacing SEO? No. AEO builds on SEO. Google says pages must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to appear in AI Overviews, so strong technical SEO, quality content, and backlinks remain the foundation. AEO adds answer-first structure, original data, and brand authority signals on top. ### How do I rank in Google AI Overviews? Google says there are no special requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. In practice, pages that rank well, answer the question directly near the top, use clear headings and lists, and come from trusted sources tend to be the ones linked in AI Overviews. ### How do I get my brand cited by ChatGPT? Allow OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt so your pages can appear in ChatGPT search, make sure your site is indexed in major search engines, publish clear answer-first content with original data, and earn mentions on sites ChatGPT already trusts, such as industry publications and review platforms. ### What are the best AEO tools? For tracking, SE Ranking AI Search, Profound, and Cairrot measure brand mentions and citations across AI engines. For technical work, Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, a schema-capable SEO plugin, and schema validators cover the essentials. ### Do I need an AEO agency? Not always. A team with strong SEO skills can apply the framework in this guide. An agency helps when you need prompt tracking at scale, original research, digital PR to earn mentions, and analytics that tie AI visibility to revenue. ## Get your AI visibility snapshot Want to know where your brand stands today? Here’s what changes, and what organic teams should actually do about it. **Content:** If you’ve noticed your organic traffic behaving strangely lately, fluctuating in ways that don’t match your rankings, you’re not imagining it. Search has changed more in the past 18 months than in the previous decade, and understanding those changes is now a prerequisite for growing your brand online. At Sentic, we help brands adapt to these changes every day. This post breaks down what’s actually changed in SEO in 2026, why it matters, and what you can do about it right now. For the full framework, read our [complete guide to answer engine optimization (AEO)](https://sentic.io/blog/answer-engine-optimization/). ## The Shift That Changed Everything: AI-Powered Search The rise of AI-generated answers at the top of search results has fundamentally altered the relationship between content and clicks. Google’s AI Overviews now appear on [roughly one in five searches](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/), and that number is growing. When a user asks a question and gets a synthesized answer before they ever see an organic result, the entire search dynamic changes. Traditional SEO measured success by rankings and click-through rates. In 2026, those metrics alone no longer tell the full story. A brand can rank #1 for a competitive keyword and still lose traffic to an AI Overview that cites a competitor’s content as the authoritative source. Visibility now means being part of the answer, not just being ranked below it. This is the core tension of modern SEO: you still need to rank, but you also need to be cited. The two goals reinforce each other, but they require different strategies. ## What’s Actually Different About SEO in 2026 ### 1. Intent Has Become Everything Google’s algorithms have become remarkably sophisticated at understanding not just what a query says, but what the user actually wants. Informational, navigational, transactional, and investigational intent all demand different content formats, depths, and structures. Keyword density is irrelevant. Answering the user’s real question clearly, directly, and thoroughly is what moves the needle. ### 2. E-E-A-T Is Now a Hard Requirement Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) has always mattered for Google’s quality raters. Google says E-E-A-T itself [isn’t a specific ranking factor](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content), but its core ranking systems use a mix of signals to reward content that demonstrates it. Brands that can demonstrate real-world experience through author credentials, original research, case studies, and consistent publishing are outranking those that can’t. If your content doesn’t show who wrote it, why they’re qualified, and what firsthand experience backs their claims, you’re starting at a disadvantage. ### 3. Zero-Click and AI-Mediated Discovery A growing share of searches, especially question-based and informational queries, now resolve without a single click. Users get what they need from the AI Overview, the featured snippet, or the Knowledge Panel. This doesn’t mean SEO is dead. It means SEO success is increasingly measured by brand impressions and citation mentions in AI responses, not just raw traffic. Brands that appear in these AI-generated answers build awareness and trust, even in zero-click scenarios. ### 4. Content Depth Has Replaced Content Volume The era of publishing dozens of shallow blog posts to capture keyword volume is over. Since the [March 2024 core update](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2024/03/core-update-spam-policies), Google assesses helpfulness through its core ranking systems rather than one standalone system, and those systems push thin, low-value content down, even on otherwise authoritative domains. What works now is fewer, deeper pieces: comprehensive guides that fully cover a topic, answer follow-up questions, and provide insights that can’t be found elsewhere. Quality has finally, definitively, beaten quantity. ### 5. Technical SEO Remains the Foundation Despite all the changes, the technical foundations of SEO haven’t gone away. They’ve become more important. Core Web Vitals, mobile-first indexing, crawlability, structured data, and site architecture all directly affect how well your content can be discovered and surfaced by AI systems. A slow, poorly structured website is a liability, regardless of how good your content is. ## The New Metric That Matters: AI Mentions One of the most practical insights from our work at Sentic is that brands now need to track their mentions across AI platforms, not just their keyword rankings. When a potential customer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google Gemini about a product category or service, is your brand mentioned? Is your competitor being recommended instead? This is a capability we’ve built into our services: comprehensive AI mention tracking across the major AI engines, paired with competitive analysis that shows you exactly where your brand stands in AI search. It’s one of the most clarifying datasets we’ve seen for brands that want to understand their true organic visibility in 2026. Want to see how your brand performs across AI search engines? Explore our [SEO services](https://sentic.io/seo/) to learn how we track and improve your visibility across both traditional and AI-powered search. ## What You Should Be Doing Right Now Here’s the practical playbook for SEO in 2026: - Audit your content for E-E-A-T signals: author bios, credentials, citations, and original perspectives. - Identify your top-performing pages and ensure they directly answer the primary question a user would have before arriving. - Invest in technical SEO hygiene: fix Core Web Vitals issues, ensure proper structured data implementation, and confirm your site is fully crawlable. - Shift your content calendar toward fewer, more comprehensive pieces rather than high-volume, low-depth publishing. - Start tracking your AI mention share alongside traditional rank tracking. This is the new competitive intelligence. - Build topical authority in your niche by covering subjects end-to-end, not just targeting individual keywords. ## SEO in 2026 Is Not Dead: It’s Evolving The brands declaring SEO dead are usually the ones who built their strategy on shortcuts. For brands that have always invested in genuine expertise and quality content, 2026 is a great equalizer: the playing field is tilting toward those who earn the right to rank and be cited. The work is more nuanced now, and the skill set required is broader. That’s exactly why more ambitious brands are partnering with agencies that have deep expertise in both traditional SEO and the emerging field of AI search. We measured how often five AI engines name and cite 55 well-known US brands across five industries, and in four of the five industries, the top two brands hold about half or more of all AI visibility. The bigger surprise: being named in an AI answer and being cited as its source are two different races, and many brands win one while losing the other.** This is Sentic’s first State of AI Visibility report. It uses SE Ranking’s AI Search data for the United States, as of October 2026, across Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. The full brand-level data is in the table at the end. ## Key findings - **Visibility is concentrated.** The top two brands hold 49.9% of share of voice in hospitality, 49.8% in senior living, 76.6% in ecommerce, and 85.3% in healthcare. B2B SaaS is the most open market we measured, and its top two still hold 40.2%. - **Mentions and citations split.** Slack has 13.2% of brand mentions in our B2B SaaS set but only 3.7% of citations. monday.com has the reverse: 0.4% of mentions and 5.5% of citations. - **In senior living, directories take the links.** Nine senior living operators receive 75.5% of brand mentions but only 24.9% of citations. Two directories, A Place for Mom and Caring.com, receive 75.1% of citations. A Place for Mom alone earns 59.6%. - **The leader changes by engine.** In hospitality, Marriott is mentioned most in Google AI Overviews, Hilton in Google AI Mode, and Best Western in Gemini. Best Western is also the most cited hotel brand in ChatGPT. ## How we ran the study We picked 11 recognizable US brands in each of five industries Sentic serves: hospitality, senior living, healthcare, B2B SaaS, and ecommerce. That is 55 brands in total. For each brand, we pulled two numbers from SE Ranking’s AI Search database for the US, using the October 2026 monthly snapshot (data pulled October 24, 2026): - **Brand mentions:** the number of tracked prompts whose AI answer names the brand. SE Ranking identifies the brand as an entity in the answer rather than by matching text. - **Citations:** how often AI answers link to the brand’s website. In Google AI Overviews this counts citations; on the other four engines it counts prompts whose answer cites the site. **Share of voice** gives mentions and citations equal weight. For each brand, we averaged its share of the industry set’s mentions and its share of the set’s citations. Shares are always relative to the 11 brands in that industry, not to the whole market. We repeated each pull until no engine returned an error. Where SE Ranking had no data for a brand on an engine, we counted it as zero. We then checked that each brand’s per-engine figures added up to its reported totals. They did for all 55 brands. **Limits worth knowing:** each engine’s prompt database is a different size, so compare brands within an engine, not raw counts across engines. Brand names are matched as SE Ranking extracts them, so a parent brand such as IHG does not get credit when an answer names only Holiday Inn. Directories and marketplaces were included on purpose where they compete for the same answers. This is one monthly snapshot, not a trend line. ## Finding 1: Two brands hold about half of AI visibility in most industries AI answers name a short list of brands, and they keep naming the same ones. In four of five industries, the top two brands in our set hold about half or more of share of voice. The bottom five brands combined hold less than a fifth everywhere, and under 3% in healthcare and ecommerce. ### Share of AI visibility held by the top two brands Share of voice among the 11 brands tracked in each industry, US, October 2026 Hospitality (Marriott, Hilton)49.9% Senior living (A Place for Mom, Caring.com)49.8% Healthcare (Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic)85.3% B2B SaaS (Salesforce, HubSpot)40.2% Ecommerce (Etsy, Wayfair)76.6% | Industry | Leader (share of voice) | Top two | Top three | Bottom five combined | |---|---|---|---|---| | Hospitality | Marriott (28.1%) | 49.9% | 60.4% | 16.3% | | Senior living | A Place for Mom (31.4%) | 49.8% | 65.3% | 10.7% | | Healthcare | Cleveland Clinic (46.8%) | 85.3% | 92.2% | 1.7% | | B2B SaaS | Salesforce (26.6%) | 40.2% | 53.3% | 17.6% | | Ecommerce | Etsy (65.9%) | 76.6% | 86.4% | 2.7% | Healthcare is the extreme case. Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic hold 85.3% of share of voice among the 11 health systems we tracked. Johns Hopkins Medicine is a distant third at 6.9%. B2B SaaS is the most competitive set, partly because our sample spans several software categories. Salesforce leads with 26.6%, and five other brands hold more than 8% each. **What it means:** if you are not one of the few brands an engine already trusts in your category, you are competing for a small slice. Most of the work is giving AI engines reasons to add you to that short list: clear entity information, content that answers the questions buyers ask, and third-party sources that confirm what you say about yourself. ## Finding 2: Being named and being cited are different races A brand mention means the AI answer talks about you. A citation means the answer links to your website as a source. Brands win these at very different rates. ### Named vs. cited: same brand, different races Share of brand mentionsShare of citations (within each brand’s industry set) Slack (B2B SaaS)13.2% 3.7% Notion (B2B SaaS)6.8% 2.5% Wayfair (Ecommerce)13.5% 7.9% Sephora (Ecommerce)9.0% 4.9% Hilton (Hospitality)24.7% 18.8% monday.com (B2B SaaS)0.4% 5.5% Chewy (Ecommerce)4.2% 15.4% Zendesk (B2B SaaS)8.5% 17.7% Accor (Hospitality)1.3% 4.5% Slack, Notion, Wayfair, Sephora, and Hilton all take a larger share of mentions than citations. AI engines know these brands well enough to recommend them, but they often source the answer from somewhere else: review sites, comparison articles, retailers, or forums. monday.com, Chewy, Zendesk, and Accor show the opposite pattern. Their websites take a much larger share of citations than their names take of mentions. A common reason is a site that answers general questions well, through guides, product information, or help documentation, so engines use it as a source even when the answer does not recommend the brand. Smaller direct-to-consumer brands show the mention-heavy pattern most clearly. Everlane, Bombas, Glossier, and Allbirds together hold 2.3% of ecommerce mentions in our set and 0.4% of citations. Each is named between 3.5 and 4.8 times as often as its site is cited. **What it means:** track both numbers. A brand with mentions but few citations has an awareness asset but no control over how it is described. A brand with citations but few mentions has useful content that is not yet building its name. ## Finding 3: In senior living, directories get the link Senior living shows the starkest split in the study. Families ask AI engines how to find assisted living or memory care, and the answers often name operators but link to directories. ### Senior living: operators get named, directories get the link Share of brand mentionsShare of citations 9 senior living operators75.5% 24.9% 2 directories (A Place for Mom, Caring.com)24.5% 75.1% The nine operators we tracked, including Sunrise Senior Living, Brookdale Senior Living, and Atria Senior Living, receive 75.5% of brand mentions in the set. Their websites receive 24.9% of citations. A Place for Mom is named in only 3.1% of mentions but earns 59.6% of citations, and it is the most cited site in our senior living set on all five engines. Senior living is also a much smaller AI footprint than the other industries. Our 11 senior living brands total 7,741 brand mentions, compared with 542,377 for our 11 hotel brands. **What it means for operators:** the directory profile is part of your AI presence, so keep listings accurate and complete. Then build the pages directories cannot: care levels, pricing approach, staffing, licensing, and community-specific details, written to answer the questions families ask. Those are the pages that earn citations back to your own site. ## Finding 4: The leader changes depending on the engine Treating “AI search” as one channel hides real differences. The brand that leads in one engine often trails in another. | Engine | Hospitality: most mentioned | Hospitality: most cited | B2B SaaS: most mentioned | B2B SaaS: most cited | |---|---|---|---|---| | Google AI Overviews | Marriott | Marriott | Salesforce | Salesforce | | Google AI Mode | Hilton | Marriott | Salesforce | Zendesk | | ChatGPT | Marriott | Best Western | Salesforce | HubSpot | | Perplexity | Marriott | Marriott | Slack | HubSpot | | Gemini | Best Western | Best Western | Slack | Zendesk | In hospitality, Marriott leads Google AI Overviews and Perplexity on both mentions and citations. Hilton is mentioned most in Google AI Mode. Best Western leads Gemini on both measures and is the most cited hotel website in ChatGPT, ahead of Marriott. In B2B SaaS, Salesforce is mentioned most in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and ChatGPT, while Slack is mentioned most in Perplexity and Gemini. Citations split across three brands: Salesforce in AI Overviews, Zendesk in AI Mode and Gemini, and HubSpot in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Some categories do not change. Etsy leads ecommerce on both measures in all five engines, and Cleveland Clinic is the most cited health system in all five. **What it means:** measure AI visibility per engine. A report that blends all engines can show a brand in first place while it trails in the assistant its buyers use most. ## What to do with this 1. **Measure mentions and citations separately, per engine.** One blended score hides where you are winning and losing. 2. **Find out who gets cited for your prompts.** If directories, review sites, or competitors’ guides are the sources, those pages show what engines want to cite. 3. **Publish answers, not just pages.** Clear question-and-answer sections, specific numbers, and pages built around single topics give engines passages they can quote and link. 4. **Make your entity easy to confirm.** Consistent Organization and Person schema, sameAs links, and up-to-date third-party profiles help engines connect your name to your site. 5. **Treat listings and reviews as part of AI search.** Where directories dominate citations, your profile there is often the first version of your brand an AI engine sees. For the full method behind these steps, see our [complete guide to answer engine optimization](/blog/answer-engine-optimization/), or the [AI search glossary](/blog/ai-search-glossary/) for definitions of terms like share of voice and citation. ## Frequently asked questions ### What is AI visibility? AI visibility is how often AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode mention your brand or cite your website in their answers. In this report we measure it with two numbers: brand mentions and citations. ### What is the difference between a brand mention and a citation? A brand mention means an AI answer names your brand. A citation means the answer links to your website as a source. A brand can be mentioned without being cited, and a site can be cited in answers that never recommend the brand. ### How is share of voice calculated in this report? For each brand, we take its share of all brand mentions in its industry set and its share of all citations in that set, and average the two. Mentions and citations get equal weight. Shares are relative to the 11 brands tracked in each industry. ### Where does the data come from? All figures come from SE Ranking’s AI Search data for the United States, October 2026 snapshot, pulled on October 24, 2026. ## Full data: 55 brands Brand mentions and citations are totals across Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. The model you choose changes which campaigns look profitable, so it changes where your budget goes. In 2026, most teams use data-driven attribution in GA4, check it against last click, and confirm big decisions with incrementality tests.** This guide explains how attribution works, which models are still available, and how to use them to put money where it actually drives revenue. ## What is marketing attribution? Marketing attribution is the process of assigning credit for a conversion to the touchpoints that led to it. A buyer might see a social ad, click a paid search ad a week later, read a blog post, and then convert from an email. Attribution decides how much credit each of those steps gets. Google defines an attribution model as “a rule, a set of rules, or a data-driven algorithm that determines how credit is assigned to touchpoints.” In GA4, the conversions you care about are called key events. ## Why does attribution matter for ROI? Attribution matters because it decides which campaigns look like they work. If you give all the credit to the last click, upper-funnel channels such as social, video, and display look weak, even when they create the demand that search later captures. Cut them, and your search results often drop a few weeks later. Good attribution helps you: - Move budget toward the channels that actually create sales, not just the ones that touch the sale last. - See how channels work together, such as social ads that lift branded search. - Set fair goals for each channel based on its role in the journey. - Spot campaigns that look busy but don’t move revenue. ## Which attribution models can you use in GA4? GA4 now offers three attribution models. Google’s [attribution documentation](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/10596866) lists them as data-driven, paid and organic last click, and Google paid channels last click. Google also notes that the first click, linear, time decay, and position-based models “are no longer available as of November 2023.” | GA4 model | How it assigns credit | Best use | |---|---|---| | Data-driven | Uses machine learning on your account’s converting and non-converting paths to estimate each touchpoint’s contribution | The default for most businesses with enough conversion volume | | Paid and organic last click | Gives 100% of the credit to the last channel clicked before converting, ignoring direct visits | A simple baseline to compare against data-driven | | Google paid channels last click | Gives 100% of the credit to the last Google Ads click, and falls back to paid and organic last click when there isn’t one | Checking Google Ads performance in isolation | One detail matters for reporting: Google says all of these models exclude direct visits from credit unless the whole path was direct visits. ### How does data-driven attribution work? Data-driven attribution compares the paths of people who converted with the paths of people who didn’t. Google says the model looks at factors such as time to conversion, device type, number of ad interactions, the order of ad exposure, and creative type. It then gives more credit to the touchpoints most likely to have caused the conversion. ## What about first-touch, linear, and U-shaped models? Rule-based models are no longer in GA4, but many CRMs and marketing platforms still offer them, and they are useful for thinking about the funnel. Each one tells a different story. | Model | Credit goes to | What it’s good for | |---|---|---| | First touch | The first interaction | Seeing which channels start new journeys | | Last touch | The final interaction | Seeing which channels close | | Linear | Every touchpoint equally | A simple view of everything that played a part | | Time decay | More credit to touchpoints closer to the conversion | Short sales cycles and promotions | | U-shaped (position-based) | Most credit to the first and last touch, the rest split in the middle | Valuing both lead creation and lead conversion | Use rule-based reports in your CRM to understand the journey. Use GA4’s data-driven model, plus testing, to make budget decisions. ## Why is attribution harder now? Attribution has gaps, and every model sees only part of the journey. Plan for these limits instead of trusting any single report. - **Consent and privacy.** Visitors who decline tracking leave gaps in the data, and browsers limit how long some identifiers last. - **Cross-device journeys.** People research on a phone and buy on a laptop. Not every path connects. - **Offline steps.** Phone calls, sales meetings, and in-person visits often sit outside analytics. - **AI and zero-click discovery.** Buyers may learn about you in a ChatGPT answer or an AI Overview and come back later by typing your name. That shows up as direct or branded traffic, not as the source that introduced them. - **Walled gardens.** Each ad platform reports conversions with its own rules, so platform totals rarely match GA4. ## How do you build an attribution setup you can trust? Combine clean tracking, one shared source of truth, and regular testing. Follow these steps. 1. **Define your key events.** Pick the actions that matter, such as purchases, qualified form fills, booked calls, and tour requests. Track them the same way across every channel. 2. **Clean up your tracking.** Use consistent UTM tags on every campaign link. Check that GA4, Google Tag Manager, and your ad platforms record the same key events. 3. **Use data-driven attribution as the default.** Set it in GA4’s attribution settings, and compare it with paid and organic last click to see which channels gain or lose credit. 4. **Bring in offline and CRM data.** Connect lead quality and closed revenue so you optimize for sales, not just form fills. 5. **Test before you make big moves.** Use holdout or geo tests to measure the true lift of a channel before you cut or double its budget. 6. **Review on a schedule.** Look at attribution monthly, and revisit the setup whenever you add a channel or change your funnel. For the GA4 setup itself, see our [GA4 guide](https://sentic.io/blog/embrace-ga4-boost-your-digital-marketing-strategy-today/). To connect attribution to ad efficiency, read [how to maximize ROAS](https://sentic.io/blog/maximizing-roas-profitable-digital-marketing-tactics/). ## What should you do with attribution data? Turn the numbers into budget decisions. Attribution is only worth the effort if it changes where money and time go. - **Shift spend gradually.** Move 10% to 20% of a channel’s budget at a time, then watch total conversions, not just the channel’s own numbers. - **Give each channel the right goal.** Judge awareness channels on reach and assisted conversions, and closing channels on cost per acquisition. - **Watch branded search and direct traffic.** When they rise after a new campaign, that campaign is likely working even if it gets little last-click credit. - **Share the full picture.** Show leadership how channels work together, so short-term reports don’t kill the programs that feed the pipeline. ## Frequently asked questions ### What is the best attribution model? For most businesses using GA4, data-driven attribution is the best default because it uses your own conversion data instead of a fixed rule. Compare it with last click to understand each channel’s role, and confirm major budget changes with an incrementality test. ### What are the main types of attribution models? The main types are single-touch models, such as first touch and last touch, multi-touch rule-based models, such as linear, time decay, and U-shaped, and data-driven models that use machine learning. GA4 currently offers data-driven and two last-click models. ### Why don’t my ad platform numbers match GA4? Each platform counts conversions with its own rules, lookback windows, and view-through settings, and each one tends to credit itself. GA4 looks across all channels with one model. Use GA4 as your shared source of truth and platform reports for in-platform optimization. ### Why do marketers use attribution modeling? Marketers use attribution to understand which channels and campaigns drive conversions, so they can move budget to what works. Without it, teams tend to over-invest in channels that close sales and under-invest in the channels that create demand in the first place. ## Get attribution you can act on Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. Then measure, and keep improving what already ranks.** This guide covers the 11 tactics Sentic uses on client sites, with Google’s own guidance linked for each one. If you want the bigger picture of how AI is reshaping search, start with [SEO in 2026: How AI Is Rewriting the Rules of Search](https://sentic.io/blog/seo-in-2026-how-ai-is-rewriting-the-rules-of-search-and-what-to-do-about-it/). ## 1. Write for people, not for keyword counts Google’s ranking systems are built to reward content that helps people, not content made to rank. Its guide to [creating helpful, reliable, people-first content](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content) asks whether your content provides original information, a complete description of the topic, and insight beyond the obvious. Thin pages written around a keyword rarely pass that test. Mass-producing pages is now a direct risk. Google’s [spam policies](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies) define “scaled content abuse” as generating many pages “for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings and not helping users,” and that explicitly includes using generative AI to create pages “without adding value for users.” Publish fewer, better pages. ## 2. Match the intent behind the search Every query has a job to be done. Someone searching “what is technical SEO” wants an explanation. Someone searching “technical SEO agency” wants to compare providers. Before you write, look at what already ranks: if page one is all guides, a sales page will struggle, and the reverse is also true. - **Informational:** guides, definitions, how-tos. - **Commercial:** comparisons, “best” lists, case studies. - **Transactional:** service, product, and pricing pages. - **Navigational:** brand and login searches, where your own pages should win. ## 3. Show who wrote it and why they know Put a named author with real credentials on every article, link to a bio, and cite your sources. Google is direct about how this works: “While E-E-A-T itself isn’t a specific ranking factor, using a mix of factors that can identify content with good E-E-A-T is useful.” Experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trust are what those factors look for, and they matter most on topics that affect people’s health, money, or safety. ## 4. Fix crawling and indexing before anything else A page Google can’t crawl or index can’t rank, no matter how good it is. Verify your site in Google Search Console, submit an XML sitemap, and review the Pages report for anything excluded by mistake. Google describes a [sitemap](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/sitemaps/overview) as a file that “tells search engines which pages and files you think are important in your site.” Check these four things on every important page: 1. It returns an HTTP 200 status. 2. It isn’t blocked by robots.txt, a noindex tag, or your CDN or firewall. 3. Its canonical tag points to itself (or to the version you want indexed). 4. At least one internal link points to it. ## 5. Pass Core Web Vitals and keep pages clean Google’s [Core Web Vitals](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/core-web-vitals) measure loading (Largest Contentful Paint), responsiveness (Interaction to Next Paint), and visual stability (Cumulative Layout Shift). Google recommends an INP of less than 200 milliseconds. Its [page experience guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/page-experience) says there is no single page experience signal, but “Core Web Vitals are used by our ranking systems,” along with factors like mobile display, secure serving, and avoiding intrusive interstitials and ad clutter. The usual fixes: compress and correctly size images, defer non-critical scripts, reserve space for ads and embeds, and cut plugins you don’t need. A fast, well-built site is the base layer, which is why our [website design and development](https://sentic.io/websites/) work treats performance as a requirement, not an add-on. ## 6. Write title links and descriptions that earn the click Your title and description are your ad in the search results. Google’s guidance on [title links](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/title-link) asks you to “write descriptive and concise text” for every title element, avoid repeated or boilerplate titles, and brand your titles concisely. For descriptions, Google says it will sometimes show your [meta description](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/snippet) when it describes the page better than on-page text, and that snippets are truncated to fit the device width. - Keep titles around 50 to 60 characters, with the main topic first. - Give every page a unique title and description. - Write descriptions of about 120 to 155 characters that state the benefit plainly. - Match the promise to the page. A title that oversells raises bounces, not rankings. ## 7. Build internal links with descriptive anchor text Internal links help Google discover pages and understand how they relate. Google’s [link best practices](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/links-crawlable) say good anchor text is “descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant to the page that it’s on and to the page it links to.” Link from your strongest pages to the ones you want to rank, use real anchor text instead of “click here,” and group related articles around a central guide. ## 8. Cover topics completely with clusters One strong guide supported by focused articles builds more authority than a dozen disconnected posts. Pick a core topic, publish a complete pillar page, then add supporting posts that answer the specific questions around it, each linking back to the pillar. Our [answer engine optimization guide](https://sentic.io/blog/answer-engine-optimization/) is an example of a pillar built this way. ## 9. Optimize video the way Google indexes it Video can earn visibility in search, but only if Google can index it. Google’s [video SEO best practices](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/video) say the watch page must be indexed, the video must be embedded on that watch page, and it needs “a valid thumbnail that’s available at a stable URL.” Add a descriptive title, a summary, and a transcript on the page so the content is available as text. ## 10. Make content easy for AI Overviews and answer engines to quote AI answers now sit above many results. Google says there are [no additional requirements](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, so the tactics above are the foundation. On top of that: - Write headings as the questions people ask and answer each one in the first 40 to 60 words. - Put steps in numbered lists and comparisons in tables. - Add original data, examples, and quotes that other pages don’t have. - Allow AI search crawlers. OpenAI’s [crawler documentation](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) says sites that block OAI-SearchBot “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.” The full playbook is in our [complete guide to answer engine optimization (AEO)](https://sentic.io/blog/answer-engine-optimization/). ## 11. Measure, then improve what already ranks The fastest wins usually come from pages already ranking on page two. Use Search Console to find queries where you rank in positions 8 to 20, then improve those pages: tighten the answer, add missing subtopics, refresh outdated facts, and strengthen internal links. Tie the results to revenue in GA4 with key events, so you can see which pages actually produce leads. Our [GA4 guide](https://sentic.io/blog/embrace-ga4-boost-your-digital-marketing-strategy-today/) covers the setup, and our [analytics team](https://sentic.io/data-analytics/) can build the reporting for you. Paid suites such as Ahrefs, Semrush, and SE Ranking add keyword research, rank tracking, backlink data, and site audits on top of Google’s free tools. ## SEO tactics that no longer work - **Keyword stuffing.** Repeating a phrase doesn’t make a page more relevant, and it makes it worse to read. - **Publishing at scale without adding value.** Google treats this as scaled content abuse. - **Buying links.** Paid links meant to manipulate rankings violate Google’s spam policies. - **Chasing a single “page experience score.”** Google says there is no single signal; fix real user problems instead. - **Ignoring AI answers.** Ranking first while a competitor is cited in the AI Overview above you still costs you attention. ## Frequently asked questions ### What is the most important SEO factor in 2026? There is no single factor. Google uses many signals. In practice, the biggest levers are helpful, original content that matches search intent, a site Google can crawl and index, and authority from other sites linking to and mentioning you. Technical problems can block everything else, so check them first. ### How long does SEO take to work? Technical fixes and improvements to pages that already rank can show results within weeks of Google recrawling them. New content and authority building usually take three to six months to show meaningful gains, and longer in competitive industries. SEO compounds, so steady work beats short bursts. ### Does SEO still matter with AI search? Yes. Google says pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and other AI tools retrieve from search indexes too. Strong SEO puts your pages in the pool AI answers draw from. Answer-first structure and original data then help you get cited. ### Is voice search optimization still worth doing? Treat it as part of a broader shift to conversational search. People ask voice assistants and AI tools full questions, so write question-shaped headings with short, direct answers. That one approach serves voice assistants, featured snippets, and AI answers at the same time. ## Get an SEO plan built for your site Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. SEO (search engine optimization) earns your pages a ranking in a list of links. AEO (answer engine optimization) earns your brand a citation or mention inside the answers that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Overviews write. AEO builds on SEO. It does not replace it.** Most of the work overlaps. Crawlability, indexing, helpful content, and authority still decide who wins. What changes is the unit of success, the shape of the content, and how you measure results. This post breaks down exactly what changes, what stays the same, and how to run both from one plan. For the full framework, read our [complete guide to answer engine optimization](https://sentic.io/blog/answer-engine-optimization/). ## What is the difference between AEO and SEO? SEO optimizes a page to rank for a keyword so people click through to your site. AEO optimizes your content and brand signals so an AI system picks your information, and ideally your name, when it writes an answer. SEO is measured in rankings and clicks. AEO is measured in citations, brand mentions, and share of voice across AI engines. | | SEO | AEO | |---|---|---| | Where you show up | Organic results on Google and Bing | Inside AI answers: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | | Unit of success | A ranking position and a click | A citation, a brand mention, or a recommendation | | Typical query | Short keyword (“aeo agency”) | Long, specific question (“which agency can help a senior living brand show up in ChatGPT?”) | | What gets evaluated | The whole page | Individual passages the AI can lift and quote | | Authority signals | Backlinks, relevance, page experience | Backlinks plus brand mentions, reviews, and consistent company data across the web | | Technical gate | Googlebot and Bingbot can crawl and index the page | The same, plus AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot are allowed | | Measurement | Rank tracking, Search Console, organic sessions | Prompt tracking, citation frequency, share of voice, AI referral traffic | | Click behavior | Clicks are the goal | Many answers end without a click, so visibility and brand recall matter more | ## What stays the same between AEO and SEO? The foundations stay the same. A page that cannot be crawled, indexed, and trusted will not rank, and it will not be cited either. Google says plainly that the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features, and that there are no extra technical requirements to appear in them. In its documentation on [AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), Google states that to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, “a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.” It adds that there are “no additional requirements” and no special optimizations needed. In a May 2025 post on [performing well in Google’s AI experiences](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2025/05/succeeding-in-ai-search), Google’s John Mueller wrote that “the underpinnings of what Google has long advised carries across to these new experiences.” These SEO fundamentals carry straight over to AEO: - **Crawl access.** Search engines and AI crawlers have to reach the page, including through your CDN and firewall rules. - **Indexing.** Google’s AI features draw on Google’s index. Other answer engines rely on their own crawlers and search partners. If you are not indexed, you are not a candidate. - **Helpful, original content.** Google asks for “unique, non-commodity content.” AI systems have already read the generic version of your article. - **Authority.** Trusted sources that other sites reference still win, in a list of links and in an answer. - **Page experience.** Fast, clean pages where the main content is easy to find serve both readers and machines. - **Structured data that matches the page.** Google asks that markup reflect the visible text. That rule applies to classic and AI results alike. This is why Sentic treats AEO as a layer on top of [technical SEO, content, and link building](https://sentic.io/seo/), not a separate program. ## What changes with AEO? Five things change: the goal moves from rankings to citations, queries get longer, AI evaluates passages instead of whole pages, brand mentions start to count alongside links, and fewer searches end in a click. Each shift changes how you plan, write, and report. ### 1. From rankings to citations On a results page, position four still gets clicks. In an AI answer, only a handful of sources are linked, and often one brand is recommended. Being one of ten links is no longer enough; you want to be the source the answer is built on. ### 2. From keywords to questions People ask AI tools full questions with context, and they ask follow-ups. Google describes a “query fan-out” technique in which AI Overviews and AI Mode issue “multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources” to build a response. Your page can be pulled in for one sub-question even if it does not rank for the main query. Plan content around the questions buyers ask, not only the head keyword. ### 3. From pages to passages Answer engines quote passages, not pages. A section that opens with a direct 40 to 60 word answer, followed by a list or table, is easy for a model to lift. A 300-word warm-up before the point gives it nothing to use. ### 4. From links to links plus mentions Backlinks still matter. AEO adds unlinked brand mentions, reviews, and consistent company information across sites such as LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikidata, and industry directories. Language models learn which brands belong with which topics from how often they appear together on trusted sites. ### 5. From clicks to visibility and quality AI answers send fewer clicks. A [Pew Research Center analysis](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/) of March 2025 browsing data found that Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. They clicked a link inside the summary itself in just 1% of visits. Google, for its part, says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are “higher quality,” with users “more likely to spend more time on the site.” Either way, the scoreboard has to change: report on visibility and conversions, not raw traffic alone. ## Does AEO replace SEO? No. AEO depends on SEO. Google requires a page to be indexed and snippet-eligible before it can appear in AI Overviews, and other answer engines retrieve from search indexes too. Drop SEO and you lose the pool of pages AI systems choose from. The smart move is to keep SEO as the foundation and add AEO practices to every page you already maintain. Search demand reflects the shift. In SE Ranking’s U.S. data, monthly searches for “aeo vs seo” rose from about 100 to 470 between late 2025 and October 2026, and searches for “answer engine optimization” grew from 470 to 1,900 over the same year. Marketers are not replacing SEO. They are adding a new question to it. ## How do you run SEO and AEO together? Run one content and technical plan with AEO steps built into each stage. The table below shows the SEO task and the AEO addition for each step. | Stage | SEO task | AEO addition | |---|---|---| | Technical | Fix crawl errors, speed, indexing; submit sitemaps | Allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot; check CDN bot rules; verify Bing indexing | | Research | Keyword volume and difficulty | The full questions and follow-ups buyers ask AI tools | | Writing | Target keyword in title, H1, and copy | Question-shaped headings and a direct answer under each one | | Formatting | Readable layout, internal links | Lists and tables for steps, comparisons, and criteria | | Information gain | Comprehensive coverage | Original data, expert quotes, and a clear point of view | | Markup | Article and Organization schema | Named author with credentials; consistent company description everywhere | | Off-site | Link building | Digital PR, reviews, and mentions on publications AI tools cite | | Reporting | Rankings, clicks, organic leads | Citations, mentions, share of voice, AI referral traffic and leads | ## Where should you start if your budget is limited? Start with whatever is blocking you. If your site has crawl or indexing problems, fix those first; nothing else works until they are solved. If your site is technically healthy, rewrite your top 10 money pages and articles with answer-first sections and tables. Then build a fixed list of 20 to 50 buyer questions and check them monthly in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google. - **Technical issues present:** technical SEO first, then AEO formatting. - **Healthy site, little content:** publish answer-first content on your core topics, with at least one original data point per piece. - **Strong content, weak brand presence:** invest in digital PR, reviews, and third-party mentions. - **Everything in place:** add AI visibility tracking and tie AI referrals to leads. ## How do you measure AEO and SEO side by side? Keep your SEO reporting and add three AEO views: citation and mention rate across a fixed prompt set, share of voice against named competitors, and AI referral traffic with its conversions. Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the Search Console Performance report under the “Web” search type, so pair Search Console with a prompt tracking tool and GA4. In GA4, filter session source for domains like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, and copilot.microsoft.com, or build a custom “AI Search” channel group. Our [analytics team](https://sentic.io/data-analytics/) sets this up so AI visibility shows up in the same report as organic and paid. ## Frequently asked questions ### Is AEO better than SEO? Neither is better; they do different jobs. SEO wins rankings and clicks in classic results. AEO wins citations and mentions in AI answers. Because AI systems choose sources from indexed, trusted pages, strong SEO makes AEO possible. Most brands need both, run from one plan. ### Is AEO the same as GEO? Yes, for practical purposes. Generative engine optimization (GEO), LLM SEO, and AI search optimization all describe the same goal: getting your brand cited and recommended in AI-generated answers. The labels differ by who coined them, but the tactics overlap almost completely. ### Do I need different content for AEO and SEO? Usually not. One well-structured page can rank and get cited. Add question-shaped headings, a direct answer under each, lists and tables, original data, and a named author. Those changes help classic rankings too, so you rarely need separate pages for each. ### How long does AEO take compared with SEO? Technical fixes such as unblocking AI crawlers can show up in AI answers within weeks of recrawling. Authority gains from original content, reviews, and mentions usually take three to six months, which is similar to SEO. Sites that already rank well tend to see AEO results fastest. ## See where you stand in AI answers Want to know how your brand shows up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews compared with your competitors? Success on TikTok depends more on creative than on targeting: ads that look and sound like native TikTok videos, refreshed often, outperform polished TV-style spots. Track results with the TikTok Pixel and Events API, and use TikTok Shop ads if you sell products in the app.** This guide covers how TikTok advertising works today, how to set up campaigns, the creative approach that performs, and how to measure results. ## Why advertise on TikTok? TikTok reaches a very large U.S. audience. In January 2026, the [newly established TikTok USDS Joint Venture](https://newsroom.tiktok.com/announcement-from-the-new-tiktok-usds-joint-venture-llc?lang=en) said the app serves more than 200 million Americans and 7.5 million businesses. People come to TikTok to be entertained and discover new things, which makes it strong for introducing products and building demand, not only for capturing it. ## What changed with TikTok’s U.S. ownership? On January 23, 2026, TikTok announced that TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC had been established in compliance with the September 25, 2025 executive order. The majority American-owned joint venture is responsible for U.S. user data, app security, and content moderation, with U.S. user data protected in Oracle’s U.S. cloud environment. For advertisers, the practical takeaway is that TikTok continues to operate in the U.S.; review TikTok’s current terms and data practices as part of your normal vendor checks. ## How do you set up a TikTok ad campaign? 1. **Create a TikTok Ads Manager account** at [ads.tiktok.com](https://ads.tiktok.com/) and set up billing. 2. **Install tracking.** Add the TikTok Pixel and, ideally, the Events API before you spend (see below). 3. **Choose an objective.** Pick the objective that matches the result you want, such as traffic, leads, or sales. TikTok optimizes delivery toward the objective you choose. 4. **Set budgets.** TikTok’s [budget rules](https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/budget) require more than $50 per campaign and more than $20 per ad group for daily budgets. Lifetime ad group budgets must cover at least $20 per day of the schedule. 5. **Define your audience.** Start broad and let TikTok’s delivery system find buyers, then add custom audiences from your site visitors and customer lists. 6. **Upload creative** and launch several ad variations per ad group so the system can find winners. ## How should you target TikTok ads? On TikTok, the video does most of the targeting. A video that speaks directly to a specific buyer’s problem will find that buyer, even with broad settings. Use targeting to set guardrails, not to micro-segment: - **Location and language** to match where you sell. - **Custom audiences** from website visitors, app users, customer lists, and people who engaged with your videos. - **Lookalike audiences** built from your best customers. - **Exclusions** for recent customers when you’re prospecting. ## What makes TikTok ad creative work? - **Hook in the first seconds.** Open with the problem, the result, or a surprising visual, not a logo. - **Look native.** Vertical, full-screen video shot on a phone, with real people talking to camera, usually beats studio production. - **Design for sound and captions.** Use voiceover or audio you have the rights to, plus on-screen captions, so the ad works with or without sound. - **Show the product in use.** Demonstrations, before-and-after results, and unboxings explain more than claims. - **Refresh often.** Creative wears out quickly on TikTok. Plan new variations every few weeks. - **Use creators.** Creator content and Spark Ads, which run organic posts as ads, often feel more trustworthy than brand-made ads. For inspiration, TikTok’s [TikTok One Creative Suite](https://ads.tiktok.com/business/creativecenter) includes a Top Ads tool for exploring top-performing ads on TikTok. Our [video marketing strategy guide](https://sentic.io/blog/video-marketing-strategy/) covers short-form video planning across platforms. ## How do you track TikTok ad results? - **TikTok Pixel:** TikTok describes the [Pixel](https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/tiktok-pixel) as “a piece of code that you can place on your website” to track visitor actions such as purchases and form submissions. - **Events API:** the [Events API](https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/events-api) is “a secure server-to-server interface” that sends events from your server, which makes tracking more reliable when browsers block cookies. - **Analytics and UTMs:** tag every ad with UTM parameters so GA4 can show what TikTok visitors do on your site. See our [GA4 guide](https://sentic.io/blog/embrace-ga4-boost-your-digital-marketing-strategy-today/). - **Lift and incrementality:** TikTok often influences sales that happen later through search or direct visits. Watch branded search volume and total sales, not only in-platform conversions. ## What are TikTok Shop ads? If you sell through TikTok Shop, Shop Ads promote your products inside TikTok, including Video Shopping Ads, LIVE Shopping Ads, and Product Shopping Ads. According to TikTok’s [Shop Ads documentation](https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/set-up-tiktok-shopping?lang=en), beginning July 2025, GMV Max became the default and only supported campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads. ## Frequently asked questions ### How much do TikTok ads cost? TikTok requires a daily budget of more than $50 per campaign and more than $20 per ad group. Actual costs per click or conversion depend on your industry, audience, creative, and competition. Strong creative is the biggest lever for lowering costs. ### Are TikTok ads effective? They can be, especially for consumer brands with visual products and for reaching new audiences. Results depend heavily on native-looking creative that is refreshed often. TikTok tends to drive demand that shows up later in search and direct sales, so measure beyond in-platform conversions. ### What is the TikTok Pixel? The TikTok Pixel is a piece of code you place on your website to track actions visitors take after seeing or clicking a TikTok ad, such as purchases or form submissions. Pairing it with the TikTok Events API, which sends events from your server, makes tracking more reliable. ### Is TikTok still available in the United States? Yes. In January 2026, TikTok announced that the TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC had been established in compliance with a September 2025 executive order. The joint venture oversees U.S. user data, app security, and content moderation, and TikTok says it serves more than 200 million Americans. ## Make TikTok part of your growth plan Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. It works best with accurate conversion tracking, strong creative assets, and clear audience signals. Since 2025, Google has added the controls advertisers asked for most: campaign-level negative keyword lists, search terms reporting, channel performance reporting, and full asset-level stats.** This guide covers how PMax works, how to set it up, the controls now available, and when PMax is the wrong choice. ## What is Performance Max? Google describes Performance Max as “a goal-based campaign type that allows you to access all Google Ads inventory” from a [single campaign](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/10724817). You supply goals, budgets, creative assets, and audience signals. Google’s bidding and targeting systems then decide which channels, placements, and combinations of assets to use for each auction. Google positions PMax as a complement to keyword-based Search campaigns, not a full replacement for them. ## How do you set up a Performance Max campaign? 1. **Fix conversion tracking first.** PMax optimizes toward whatever you count as a conversion. Track real outcomes, such as purchases or qualified leads, with accurate values. 2. **Choose a goal and bid strategy.** Use Maximize conversion value with a target ROAS for ecommerce, or Maximize conversions with a target CPA for lead generation. 3. **Build asset groups by theme.** An asset group is a set of creative built around a product category, service, or audience. Keep each one focused. 4. **Add audience signals.** Give Google your customer lists, website visitors, and custom segments as starting points. Signals guide the AI; they don’t restrict it. 5. **Connect your product feed** through Merchant Center if you sell products. 6. **Set your controls** (brand exclusions, negative keyword lists, URL rules) before launch, not after. ## What assets does Performance Max need? | Asset | Allowed per asset group | Notes | |---|---|---| | Headlines | 3 to 15 | Up to 30 characters each | | Long headlines | 1 to 5 | Up to 90 characters each | | Descriptions | 2 to 5 | Up to 90 characters each | | Images | Up to 20 | Horizontal, square, and vertical sizes | | Videos | Up to 15 | Google may create videos automatically if you don’t add one | Limits come from Google’s guides to [text assets](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/14528373), [image assets](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/14530211), and [video assets](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/14528532). Supply your own videos: auto-generated versions rarely match your brand. Our [video marketing strategy guide](https://sentic.io/blog/video-marketing-strategy/) covers what makes short video work. ## What controls does Performance Max have now? | Control or report | What it does | |---|---| | Campaign-level negative keyword lists | Stop ads from showing on searches you don’t want | | Search terms reporting | See which searches triggered your ads, in all PMax campaigns and through the API | | Channel performance report | See results by channel, such as Search, YouTube, and Display | | Full asset stats | See conversions, cost, and clicks for individual assets | | Brand exclusions | Control whether ads show on searches for your brand or other brands | | Final URL expansion controls | Exclude pages, such as careers or privacy pages, that shouldn’t be used as landing pages | | Device and age targeting | Limit which devices or age groups your ads reach | Google announced campaign-level negative keyword lists, search terms reporting for all PMax campaigns, device and age targeting, and full asset stats in an [August 2025 update](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16451273). Channel performance reporting became available in all PMax campaigns in [November 2025](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16710258). Google calls [brand exclusions](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16669487) “the most effective way to control how your ads appear on searches for your brand.” ## How do you optimize Performance Max? - **Review search terms weekly** and add irrelevant queries to a negative keyword list. - **Check the channel performance report** to see whether spend is going to Search, YouTube, or Display, and whether that matches your goals. - **Replace weak assets** using asset-level stats instead of guessing. - **Exclude your brand** if you already run a branded Search campaign, so PMax doesn’t take credit for customers who were already looking for you. - **Exclude low-value URLs** so Google doesn’t send paid traffic to pages that can’t convert. - **Give changes time.** Large budget or target changes reset learning. Adjust in steps and judge results over weeks, not days. ## When should you not use Performance Max? - **When conversion tracking is weak.** PMax will optimize toward bad data at scale. - **When you have very little conversion volume.** The system needs data to learn; a handful of conversions a month is rarely enough. - **When you need tight message control.** Regulated industries or brands with strict creative rules may prefer Search campaigns with fixed ad copy. - **When you need to isolate a single channel.** If you only want YouTube or only want Search, use the dedicated campaign type. For setting the right efficiency target, read our guide to [profitable ROAS](https://sentic.io/blog/maximizing-roas-profitable-digital-marketing-tactics/). ## Frequently asked questions ### What is Performance Max in Google Ads? Performance Max is a goal-based Google Ads campaign type that runs across all Google Ads inventory, including YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail, and Maps, from a single campaign. Google’s AI decides where ads show and which asset combinations to use, based on your goals, assets, and audience signals. ### Can you add negative keywords to Performance Max? Yes. In August 2025, Google announced campaign-level negative keyword lists for Performance Max campaigns. You can use them to stop ads from appearing on searches that are irrelevant or unprofitable. ### Can you see search terms in Performance Max? Yes. Google made search terms reporting available for all Performance Max campaigns and through the Google Ads API in August 2025. Review it regularly and add poor-quality queries as negative keywords. ### Is Performance Max worth it? It can be, especially for ecommerce brands with reliable conversion tracking, a solid product feed, and good creative. It is a poor fit when conversion data is thin or inaccurate, or when you need strict control over where ads appear and what they say. ## Get more from Google Ads Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. How to Calculate It and Set a Profitable Target](https://sentic.io/blog/maximizing-roas-profitable-digital-marketing-tactics/) **Published:** February 12, 2023 **Author:** **Excerpt:** The ROAS formula, how to find your break-even and target ROAS from your margins, how ROAS compares with ROI, ACOS, and MER, and how to improve it. **Content:** **ROAS (return on ad spend) is the revenue your ads generate divided by what you spent on them. A ROAS of 4 means $4 in revenue for every $1 in ad spend. There is no universal “good” ROAS: your break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your profit margin before ad costs, so a business with a 25% margin needs a ROAS of at least 4 just to break even. Set targets from your margins, then improve ROAS with accurate conversion values, tighter targeting, and better landing pages.** This guide shows how to calculate ROAS, how to set a profitable target, how ROAS compares with other efficiency metrics, and the levers that improve it. ## How do you calculate ROAS? The formula is simple: **ROAS = revenue from ads ÷ ad spend** If a campaign spends $5,000 and drives $20,000 in tracked revenue, ROAS is 4, often written as 4:1, 4x, or 400%. Google Ads uses the percentage format. Its [Target ROAS bid strategy](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6268637) describes target ROAS as “the average conversion value (for example, revenue) you’d like to get for each dollar you spend on ads,” so a 400% target means $4 of conversion value per $1 of spend. ## What is a good ROAS? A good ROAS is one that makes money after all costs, and that depends on your margin. A 4:1 ROAS is very profitable for a software company with 80% gross margins and a loss for a retailer that keeps 20% of each sale. Start with your break-even ROAS: **Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ profit margin before ad costs** | Profit margin before ad costs | Break-even ROAS | |---|---| | 20% | 5.0 (500%) | | 25% | 4.0 (400%) | | 33% | 3.0 (300%) | | 50% | 2.0 (200%) | | 75% | 1.33 (133%) | “Profit margin before ad costs” means revenue minus product cost, shipping, payment fees, and returns, as a share of revenue. Anything above break-even ROAS contributes profit; anything below loses money on that sale. ## How do you set a profitable ROAS target? 1. **Calculate break-even ROAS** for each major product line or service, since margins often differ. 2. **Add your profit goal.** If you need 10 points of profit on a 40% margin product, you can spend up to 30% of revenue on ads, so your target ROAS is 1 ÷ 0.30 = 3.33. 3. **Adjust for customer lifetime value.** If customers reorder, you can accept a lower ROAS on the first purchase. Only do this if you track repeat revenue. 4. **Set different targets by goal.** Branded search and retargeting should beat your target; prospecting campaigns that find new customers often run below it. ## How is ROAS different from ROI, ACOS, and MER? | Metric | Formula | Use it for | |---|---|---| | ROAS | Ad revenue ÷ ad spend | Comparing campaigns and channels | | ROI | (Profit − total investment) ÷ total investment | Judging whether marketing makes money overall | | ACOS | Ad spend ÷ ad revenue | Amazon advertising; the inverse of ROAS | | MER (marketing efficiency ratio) | Total revenue ÷ total marketing spend | Checking the whole business, beyond what platforms can track | Platform ROAS only counts sales each platform can track, and platforms often credit the same sale. MER is a useful reality check because it uses your actual total revenue. Our guide to [attribution models](https://sentic.io/blog/maximizing-marketing-roi-with-attribution-modelling/) explains why platform numbers rarely add up. ## How do you measure ROAS accurately? - **Send real conversion values.** Google’s documentation on [conversion values](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/3419241) says they help you “measure and optimize the true business impact” of your ads. Pass actual order values, not a flat number. - **Value leads properly.** For lead generation, assign values based on how often each lead type becomes a customer, and update them as you learn. - **Remove duplicates.** Make sure a purchase isn’t counted twice by two tags or two platforms. - **Account for returns and cancellations.** Adjust or retract conversion values when orders are refunded. - **Check analytics setup.** Our [GA4 guide](https://sentic.io/blog/embrace-ga4-boost-your-digital-marketing-strategy-today/) covers the tracking foundations. ## How do you improve ROAS? 1. **Cut waste.** Review search terms and add negative keywords for queries that never convert. 2. **Use value-based bidding.** Once conversion values are reliable, Target ROAS or Maximize conversion value bidding focuses spend on higher-value sales. 3. **Improve the product feed.** For Shopping and Performance Max, clear titles, accurate prices, and good images raise click and conversion rates. 4. **Fix the landing page.** Faster pages, clear offers, and fewer form fields lift conversion rate, which raises ROAS without changing bids. 5. **Separate brand and non-brand.** Branded search inflates blended ROAS. Report it separately so you can see how prospecting really performs. 6. **Raise average order value.** Bundles, free-shipping thresholds, and upsells increase revenue per conversion. For Google’s automated campaigns, see our guide to [Performance Max](https://sentic.io/blog/optimizing-google-ads-with-performance-max-campaigns/). For Amazon, see [our Amazon Ads guide](https://sentic.io/blog/amazon-ads-navigating-the-future-of-digital-advertising/). ## Frequently asked questions ### What is ROAS? ROAS, or return on ad spend, is the revenue generated by advertising divided by the cost of that advertising. A ROAS of 4 means every $1 in ad spend produced $4 in revenue. It is usually reported as a ratio, a multiple, or a percentage. ### What is a good ROAS? There is no single good ROAS because it depends on profit margin. Your break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your profit margin before ad costs. A business with a 25% margin breaks even at a ROAS of 4, while one with a 50% margin breaks even at 2. ### How do you calculate break-even ROAS? Divide 1 by your profit margin before ad costs, expressed as a decimal. For example, if you keep 30% of revenue after product, shipping, and fees, your break-even ROAS is 1 ÷ 0.30, or about 3.33. ### Is ROAS the same as ROI? No. ROAS measures revenue per dollar of ad spend. ROI measures profit relative to the total investment, including product costs and other expenses. A campaign can have a high ROAS and still lose money if margins are thin. ## Grow revenue without wasting spend Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. On YouTube, Google Ads offers a dedicated ad sequence option in Video campaigns. On Meta, TikTok, and other platforms, you can build a sequence by retargeting people who watched an earlier ad. Sequences work best when each step has one job: introduce, explain, then ask for action.** This guide explains how sequencing works on each platform, four sequence structures we use, and how to measure whether a sequence is working. ## What is ad sequencing? Ad sequencing is a way of telling a story across several ads instead of one. A viewer sees ad one, then ad two, then ad three, in that order. Because the platform knows who has seen which ad, the later ads can assume the viewer already knows the basics and move closer to a sale. Compare that with a standard campaign, where the platform rotates ads at random and a viewer might see your “buy now” ad before they have ever heard of you. ## Why use ad sequencing? - **Longer stories.** A product with a long or complex sales cycle rarely fits into one 15-second ad. - **Less repetition.** Viewers see new creative at each step instead of the same ad again and again. - **Better use of short formats.** A six-second ad can work as a reminder when the viewer has already seen a longer ad that explained the offer. - **Clearer testing.** You can see where people drop out of the sequence and fix that step. ## How does ad sequencing work on YouTube? Google Ads includes an “Ad sequence” option when you [create a Video campaign](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2375497). You build the sequence as a series of steps, each with its own video ad, and Google serves the steps in order to the same viewer. According to Google’s help page [about video ad sequencing](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9161595), the default frequency cap is one sequence per person in a 7-day period, and you can change it to one sequence per person in a 30-day period. Google recommends against editing the cap after the campaign is saved. For standard video campaigns outside a sequence, Google’s [frequency capping](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/117579) lets you limit impressions or views per person per day, week, or month. ## How do you sequence ads on Meta, TikTok, and LinkedIn? These platforms don’t run sequences for you the way YouTube does, but you can build one with audiences: 1. **Step one:** run an introductory video to a broad or interest-based audience. 2. **Step two:** build an engagement audience of people who watched a meaningful share of that video, and show them a second ad that explains the product or proof. 3. **Step three:** retarget people who engaged with step two, or visited your site, with a direct offer. 4. **Exclusions:** exclude each later audience from the earlier steps, and exclude recent customers from the whole sequence. Audience-based sequences need enough reach at step one to fill the later steps, so they suit larger budgets or longer flights. ## What are the best ad sequence structures? | Structure | How it works | Best for | |---|---|---| | Introduce, then remind | A longer ad explains the offer, followed by short reminders | Launches and seasonal offers | | Teaser, then reveal | Early ads build curiosity; a later ad reveals the product or event | Product launches and events | | Story in chapters | Each ad continues a narrative from the last | Brand campaigns and complex services | | Problem, proof, offer | Name the problem, show evidence it works, then make an offer | Lead generation and considered purchases | ## How do you build an ad sequence that works? 1. **Set one goal for the whole sequence.** Awareness, consideration, or conversion. Everything else follows from it. 2. **Give each step one job.** If a step is trying to introduce the brand and close the sale, split it. 3. **Write the sequence before the ads.** Map what the viewer should know or feel after each step, then brief creative to that. 4. **Make each ad work alone.** Some viewers will drop out or skip, so every ad should still make sense on its own. 5. **Keep it short.** Three to four steps is enough for most sequences. 6. **Plan for the end.** Decide what happens to people who finish the sequence without acting: a retargeting pool, an email offer, or an exclusion. ## How do you measure ad sequencing? | Metric | What it tells you | |---|---| | Completion and view rates by step | Which step loses attention | | Step-to-step audience size | How many people move through the sequence | | Brand lift (where available) | Whether recall and consideration improve versus a control group | | Site visits and conversions by audience | Whether people who saw the full sequence act more than those who didn’t | Make sure your analytics can connect ad exposure to on-site behavior. Our [GA4 guide](https://sentic.io/blog/embrace-ga4-boost-your-digital-marketing-strategy-today/) covers the setup, and our guide to [attribution models](https://sentic.io/blog/maximizing-marketing-roi-with-attribution-modelling/) explains how to credit upper-funnel video fairly. ## Frequently asked questions ### What is ad sequencing? Ad sequencing is showing the same person a series of ads in a planned order, so each ad builds on the one before it. It lets brands tell a longer story, reduce repetition, and move viewers from awareness toward a purchase. ### Does Google Ads still offer video ad sequencing? Yes. Google Ads includes an ad sequence option in Video campaigns. By default, each person sees the sequence at most once in a 7-day period, and advertisers can change that to once in a 30-day period. ### Can you sequence ads on Meta or TikTok? You can build a sequence with audiences. Show an introductory video first, retarget people who watched a meaningful share of it with a second ad, then retarget engaged viewers with an offer. Exclude each later audience from earlier steps so people move forward. ### How many ads should an ad sequence have? Three to four ads works for most sequences. Fewer steps keep enough people moving through the sequence to measure results, and each ad can still focus on a single job. ## Turn video views into pipeline Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. To get value from GA4, set up key events for the actions that matter, register your custom dimensions, connect Google Ads and BigQuery, raise data retention to 14 months, and watch the new AI Assistant channel that shows traffic from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.** This guide covers what changed from Universal Analytics, the setup steps we prioritize for clients, the limits to plan around, and the newest GA4 features worth using. ## What is GA4? GA4 is an event-based analytics platform. Every interaction, from a page view to a form submission, is recorded as an event with parameters that describe it. Universal Analytics was built around sessions and page views, so GA4 reports look different and some old metrics no longer exist in the same form. ## What happened to Universal Analytics? According to [Google’s migration timeline](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/11583528): - Standard Universal Analytics properties stopped processing data starting July 1, 2023. - Starting the week of July 1, 2024, users lost access to all current and historical Universal Analytics data, including through the interface and the API. If you never exported your Universal Analytics history, it is gone. GA4 is now the system of record for Google Analytics data. ## What changed from Universal Analytics to GA4? | Universal Analytics | GA4 | |---|---| | Sessions and page views as the core model | Events and parameters as the core model | | Goals | Key events (for site analytics) and conversions (for ad campaigns) | | Bounce rate as the main engagement metric | Engaged sessions and engagement rate | | Separate web and app properties | Web and app data streams in one property | | BigQuery export for paid 360 customers only | BigQuery export available to standard properties | ### What are key events in GA4? Key events are the actions you mark as most important to your business, such as a lead form submission or a purchase. Google [renamed GA4 conversions to key events](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/13965727) in March 2024. The word “conversion” now refers to actions used to measure ad campaign performance in Google Ads, so you may see both terms. ## How should you set up GA4? 1. **Mark your key events.** Pick the five or six actions that signal real business value, such as form submissions, calls, booked demos, and purchases. Skip vanity events. 2. **Register custom dimensions.** Event parameters you send, such as form name or plan type, do not appear in reports until you register them as custom dimensions. 3. **Raise data retention to 14 months.** Standard properties default to two months for user-level data in explorations. [Google’s retention settings](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/7667196) let standard properties choose 2 or 14 months. 4. **Link Google Ads and Search Console.** This brings ad cost, campaign data, and organic queries into the same reports. 5. **Turn on BigQuery export.** It stores raw event data you can keep longer and query freely. Standard properties have a [daily export limit of 1 million events](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9358801). 6. **Configure consent mode.** If you have visitors in regions with consent requirements, set up Google’s consent mode so tags respect user choices and GA4 can model missing data. 7. **Filter internal traffic.** Exclude your own team and agency partners so they don’t inflate engagement and test conversions. ## What are GA4’s custom dimension limits? Plan your tracking around these limits from [Google’s custom dimensions documentation](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/10075209): | Type | Standard property | Analytics 360 property | |---|---|---| | Event-scoped custom dimensions | 50 | 125 | | User-scoped custom dimensions | 25 | 100 | | Item-scoped custom dimensions | 10 | 25 | | Custom metrics | 50 | 125 | | Calculated metrics | 5 | 50 | Fifty event-scoped dimensions sounds like plenty until several teams start adding them. Keep a shared tracking plan so you don’t run out. ## Which new GA4 features are worth using? ### AI Assistant traffic channel On May 13, 2026, Google added an [AI Assistant channel](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9164320) to GA4’s default channel group. Visits from recognized AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are now labeled with the medium “ai-assistant” and grouped under the AI Assistant channel. For the first time, you can compare AI referral traffic with organic search without building a custom channel group. This is the clearest measure available of how [answer engine optimization](https://sentic.io/blog/answer-engine-optimization/) is working for your site. Our [AEO vs SEO](https://sentic.io/blog/aeo-vs-seo/) guide explains how to track both side by side. ### Predictive metrics GA4 can predict purchase probability, churn probability, and predicted revenue, then turn them into audiences for Google Ads. Google lists [eligibility requirements](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9846734), including a minimum number of users who did and did not take the predicted action, so smaller sites may not qualify. ### Explorations Explorations are GA4’s flexible analysis tools. Funnel exploration shows where people drop out of a process, path exploration shows the routes people take through your site, and segment overlap shows how audiences intersect. ### DebugView DebugView shows events from a test device in real time. Use it every time you add or change tracking, before the data reaches your reports. ## What are the most common GA4 mistakes? - **Too many key events.** Marking every click as a key event makes reports and ad bidding less useful. - **Unregistered parameters.** Data is collected but never appears in reports because nobody registered the custom dimension. - **Two-month retention.** Explorations quietly lose history you will want later. - **Duplicate tags.** A hard-coded tag plus a Google Tag Manager tag doubles page views and events. - **No internal traffic filter.** Team visits and test submissions distort small sites the most. GA4 is also only one part of measurement. Read our guide to [marketing attribution models](https://sentic.io/blog/maximizing-marketing-roi-with-attribution-modelling/) to see how it fits with platform and CRM data. ## Frequently asked questions ### Is Universal Analytics still available? No. Standard Universal Analytics properties stopped processing data on July 1, 2023, and starting the week of July 1, 2024, Google removed access to all Universal Analytics data, including historical reports and the API. GA4 is the current version of Google Analytics. ### What is the difference between key events and conversions in GA4? Key events are the actions you mark as important for analyzing your site or app, such as form submissions or purchases. Conversions are the actions used to measure and optimize ad campaigns in Google Ads. Google renamed GA4 conversions to key events in March 2024. ### Can GA4 track traffic from ChatGPT and other AI assistants? Yes. Since May 13, 2026, GA4 assigns visits from recognized AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to a dedicated AI Assistant channel in the default channel group, with the medium “ai-assistant.” You can compare this traffic with organic search in standard acquisition reports. ### How long does GA4 keep data? Standard GA4 properties can keep user-level data for 2 or 14 months. Analytics 360 adds longer options for event data. Aggregated standard reports are not affected by this setting, but explorations are, so most businesses should choose 14 months and export raw data to BigQuery for longer history. ## Get GA4 data you can trust Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. It sells ads inside the Amazon store, on streaming TV and audio, and across other websites and apps through Amazon DSP. It is now one of the largest ad platforms in the world: Amazon reported about $68.6 billion in advertising revenue for 2025, up from $31.2 billion in 2021. For brands that sell on Amazon, ads are close to required. For brands that don’t, Amazon’s shopper data can still power upper-funnel campaigns.** This guide covers how big the channel is, which ad types to use, how to measure them, and where Amazon fits next to Google and Meta in a media plan. ## What is Amazon Ads? Amazon Ads is the platform brands use to buy advertising from Amazon. The best-known formats appear in Amazon search results and on product pages, where shoppers are already close to buying. Amazon also sells video, streaming TV, audio, and display ads that reach people on and off Amazon, targeted with Amazon’s shopping signals. ## How big is Amazon’s advertising business? Amazon’s ad revenue has more than doubled in four years. The figures below add up the “advertising services” line from each quarterly results release Amazon published for that year. | Year | Amazon advertising revenue | |---|---| | 2021 | $31.2 billion | | 2022 | $37.7 billion | | 2023 | $46.9 billion | | 2024 | $56.2 billion | | 2025 | $68.6 billion | Growth has continued in 2026. In its [second-quarter 2026 results](https://ir.aboutamazon.com/news-release/news-release-details/2026/Amazon-com-Announces-Second-Quarter-Results/default.aspx), Amazon reported $19.8 billion in advertising revenue for the quarter, up 26% year over year. ## What types of Amazon ads are there? | Ad type | Where it shows | Best for | |---|---|---| | Sponsored Products | Amazon search results and product pages | Driving sales of individual products | | Sponsored Brands | Top of search results, with your logo, headline, and several products or a video | Brand awareness and defending branded searches | | Display ads (formerly Sponsored Display) | On and off Amazon | Retargeting shoppers who viewed your products | | Stores | Your free, multi-page brand store on Amazon | A branded destination for ads and traffic | | Video, streaming TV, and audio | Streaming TV, online video, and audio, bought through Amazon DSP | Reaching new audiences with Amazon’s shopper data | Amazon notes that [Sponsored Display is now known as display ads](https://advertising.amazon.com/solutions/products/sponsored-display), managed in Amazon Ads Agent, the platform that brings sponsored ads and Amazon DSP into a single workspace. Amazon has also opened up outside inventory: in its [third-quarter 2025 results](https://ir.aboutamazon.com/news-release/news-release-details/2025/Amazon-com-Announces-Third-Quarter-Results/default.aspx), it announced partnerships that let advertisers buy ad space on Netflix, Spotify, and SiriusXM Media through Amazon Ads. ## Who should advertise on Amazon? - **Brands that sell on Amazon.** Sponsored ads are the main way to gain visibility for new products and to keep competitors off your branded searches. - **Brands that sell elsewhere but whose buyers shop on Amazon.** Amazon DSP lets you reach in-market shoppers on streaming TV and across the web, then send them to your own site. - **Brands deciding between Amazon and their own store.** Many run both. Our [Ultra Game case study](https://sentic.io/results/ultra-game/) shows how a retailer that sold only on Amazon grew net sales after launching its own Shopify site. ## How do you structure Amazon ad campaigns? 1. **Start with automatic Sponsored Products campaigns.** Amazon matches your products to searches, which shows you the terms shoppers actually use. 2. **Move proven terms into manual campaigns.** Bid on the search terms that convert, and add the ones that waste spend as negative keywords. 3. **Defend your brand.** Run Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Products on your own brand name so competitors can’t take those sales. 4. **Retarget product viewers.** Use display ads to bring back shoppers who looked at your products but didn’t buy. 5. **Fix the product page first.** Titles, images, reviews, and price decide whether a click turns into a sale. Ads can’t fix a weak listing. ## How do you measure Amazon advertising? | Metric | Formula | What it tells you | |---|---|---| | ACOS (advertising cost of sale) | Ad spend ÷ ad-attributed sales | How much you spend on ads for each dollar of ad sales | | ROAS (return on ad spend) | Ad-attributed sales ÷ ad spend | The inverse of ACOS: sales per ad dollar | | TACoS (total advertising cost of sale) | Ad spend ÷ total sales | Whether ads are growing total sales, including organic sales | | New-to-brand sales | Share of ad sales from first-time buyers of your brand | Whether ads are finding new customers or reselling to existing ones | A useful rule: your break-even ACOS equals your profit margin before ad costs. If you keep 30% of each sale after product and fulfillment costs, an ACOS above 30% loses money on ad-driven sales. Our [guide to profitable ROAS](https://sentic.io/blog/maximizing-roas-profitable-digital-marketing-tactics/) walks through the same math for every channel. ## Where does Amazon fit with Google and Meta? Each platform catches buyers at a different moment. Google Search and Shopping capture people researching a purchase across the web. Meta and TikTok create demand among people who weren’t looking yet. Amazon captures shoppers who are ready to buy on Amazon itself. Most ecommerce brands get the best results by planning the three together, with one view of total sales and margin rather than three separate platform reports. For the Google side, see our guide to [Performance Max campaigns](https://sentic.io/blog/optimizing-google-ads-with-performance-max-campaigns/). ## Frequently asked questions ### How much does Amazon make from advertising? Amazon’s quarterly results show about $68.6 billion in advertising revenue for 2025, up from $56.2 billion in 2024 and $46.9 billion in 2023. In the second quarter of 2026, ad revenue was $19.8 billion, up 26% year over year. ### Are Amazon ads worth it? For brands that sell on Amazon, usually yes, because sponsored ads drive much of the visibility in Amazon search results. Whether they are profitable depends on your margin. Compare your ACOS with your profit margin before ad costs, and track TACoS to see whether ads are lifting total sales. ### What is a good ACOS on Amazon? There is no single good ACOS. Your break-even ACOS equals your profit margin before ad costs, so a product with a 40% margin can afford a higher ACOS than one with a 15% margin. Many brands accept a higher ACOS on launches and branded defense, and a lower one on mature products. ### What is the difference between Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands? Sponsored Products promote a single product in search results and on product pages. Sponsored Brands show your logo, a custom headline, and several products or a video, usually at the top of search results. Sponsored Products drive most direct sales; Sponsored Brands build brand recognition and protect branded searches. ## Grow profitably on and off Amazon Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. Each definition is written to be short, accurate, and linked to a primary source where one exists.** AI search has created a lot of new vocabulary, and many terms overlap. Use this page as a reference, and read our [complete guide to answer engine optimization](https://sentic.io/blog/answer-engine-optimization/) to see how the pieces fit together. We update this glossary as platforms change. **Jump to:** [A](#letter-a) · [B](#letter-b) · [C](#letter-c) · [E](#letter-e) · [F](#letter-f) · [G](#letter-g) · [H](#letter-h) · [I](#letter-i) · [L](#letter-l) · [O](#letter-o) · [P](#letter-p) · [Q](#letter-q) · [R](#letter-r) · [S](#letter-s) · [T](#letter-t) · [Z](#letter-z) ## A ### AEO (answer engine optimization) Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring your content, data, and brand signals so AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Overviews can find your information, trust it, and cite it in their answers. Read the full [answer engine optimization guide](https://sentic.io/blog/answer-engine-optimization/), or see how it compares with traditional SEO in [AEO vs SEO](https://sentic.io/blog/aeo-vs-seo/). ### AI crawler An AI crawler is a bot that an AI company uses to fetch web pages, either to show them in AI search answers or to collect training data. Examples include OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, and PerplexityBot. You control most AI crawlers through your robots.txt file. ### AI Mode AI Mode is a conversational search experience in Google Search where people ask longer questions and follow-ups and get an AI-generated answer with links to sources. Google says pages need to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear, with [no additional requirements](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features). ### AI Overviews AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google search results, with links to the web pages that support them. Being one of the linked sources is a core goal of AEO. ### AI referral traffic AI referral traffic is website traffic that arrives from links in AI tools, such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, and copilot.microsoft.com. You can see it in GA4 by filtering session source for those domains or by building a custom channel group. ### AI visibility AI visibility describes how often and how favorably your brand appears in AI-generated answers for the questions your buyers ask. It is usually measured with citation frequency, brand mention rate, and share of voice across a fixed set of prompts. ### Answer engine An answer engine is a search product that responds to a question with a written answer instead of, or on top of, a list of links. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Overviews are all answer engines. ### Answer-first content Answer-first content opens each section with a direct answer to the question in its heading, usually in 40 to 60 words, before adding detail. It gives readers and AI systems a clean passage to quote. It is also called the BLUF method. ## B ### BLUF (bottom line up front) BLUF stands for bottom line up front, a writing method that puts the main point or answer first. In AEO, it means opening each section with the direct answer so an AI system can lift it without reading the whole page. ### Brand mention A brand mention is any time your brand is named, with or without a link. In AI search, a mention means the answer names your brand, even if it doesn’t link to your site. Unlinked mentions on trusted sites also help models associate your brand with your category. ## C ### ChatGPT search ChatGPT search is the feature that lets ChatGPT retrieve current web results and cite them with links. OpenAI introduced it in October 2024 and says it uses third-party search providers along with content from partners. Sites that block [OAI-SearchBot](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) won’t appear in its answers. ### Citation In AI search, a citation is a link to a source page that an AI answer shows to support what it says. A citation can send traffic and signals that the engine treated your page as a trusted source. ### Citation frequency Citation frequency is how often AI answers link to your pages across a fixed set of tracked prompts and engines. It is one of the main AEO metrics, alongside brand mention rate and share of voice. ### Co-occurrence Co-occurrence is when your brand name appears near a topic or category on the same pages across the web. Language models learn associations from text, so frequent co-occurrence on trusted sites helps a model connect your brand with the topics you want to be known for. ### Core Web Vitals [Core Web Vitals](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/core-web-vitals) are Google’s metrics for page experience: Largest Contentful Paint (loading), Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness), and Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability). Google recommends an Interaction to Next Paint of less than 200 milliseconds. ## E ### E-E-A-T E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. Google says E-E-A-T itself [isn’t a specific ranking factor](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content), but its systems use a mix of signals to reward content that demonstrates it. Named authors, credentials, and cited sources help. ### Entity An entity is a distinct thing that search engines and AI models can identify, such as a company, person, product, or place. Keeping your company’s name, description, and details consistent across the web makes it easier for AI systems to recognize your brand as one entity. ## F ### Featured snippet A featured snippet is a highlighted excerpt from a web page that Google shows near the top of some search results to answer a question directly. The same answer-first formatting that wins featured snippets also helps content get quoted in AI answers. ## G ### Generative engine optimization (GEO) Generative engine optimization is another name for optimizing content to appear in AI-generated answers. The term was introduced in a [2023 research paper](https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735) presented at KDD 2024, which found that adding quotations, statistics, and citations could boost visibility in AI answers by up to 40%. ### Google-Extended Google-Extended is a robots.txt token that lets site owners control whether Google uses their content to train Gemini models and to ground Gemini Apps and Vertex AI responses. Google says it [does not affect inclusion or ranking](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/google-common-crawlers) in Google Search. ### GPTBot GPTBot is OpenAI’s crawler for collecting content that may be used to train its AI models. Blocking it signals that your content should not be used for training. It does not control whether you appear in ChatGPT search; [OAI-SearchBot](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) does. ### Grounding Grounding is when an AI system bases its answer on specific sources, such as live search results or documents, instead of only on what it learned in training. Grounded answers usually include citations, which is where AEO creates visibility. ## H ### Hallucination A hallucination is a confident but false statement produced by an AI model. Clear, consistent, well-sourced information about your brand reduces the chance that AI answers describe it inaccurately. ## I ### Indexing Indexing is when a search engine stores a page so it can appear in results. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, so indexing is the starting point for AEO. ### IndexNow [IndexNow](https://www.indexnow.org/) is a protocol that lets websites notify participating search engines when pages are added, updated, or deleted. Participating engines include Microsoft Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex, and Yep. ### Information gain Information gain is the new information a page adds beyond what other pages on the topic already say, such as original data, expert quotes, or first-hand examples. AI systems have already seen the common version of most topics, so information gain makes a page worth citing. ## L ### Large language model (LLM) A large language model is an AI model trained on large amounts of text to understand and generate language. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and the models behind Perplexity and Copilot are built on LLMs. ### LLM SEO LLM SEO is optimization aimed at getting content and brands cited by AI systems built on large language models. It is another name for [answer engine optimization](https://sentic.io/blog/answer-engine-optimization/) and GEO. ### llms.txt llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file at a site’s root that gives language models a curated summary of the site’s key pages. Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI [proposed it in September 2024](https://www.answer.ai/posts/2024-09-03-llmstxt.html). It is optional, and major AI search providers have not confirmed they rely on it. ## O ### OAI-SearchBot OAI-SearchBot is OpenAI’s crawler for ChatGPT search. OpenAI’s documentation says sites that block it [will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots), although they can still appear as plain navigational links. ## P ### Parametric knowledge Parametric knowledge is what an AI model learned during training and stores in its internal weights. When a model answers without searching, it relies on parametric knowledge, which is why a consistent brand presence across the web matters over time. ### PerplexityBot PerplexityBot is the crawler Perplexity uses to surface and link websites in its search results. Perplexity says it is [not used to crawl content for AI foundation models](https://docs.perplexity.ai/guides/bots) and recommends allowing it in robots.txt. ### Prompt A prompt is the question or instruction a person types into an AI tool. Prompts tend to be longer and more specific than search keywords, so AEO research focuses on the full questions buyers ask. ### Prompt tracking Prompt tracking is running a fixed list of buyer questions through AI engines on a regular schedule and recording whether your brand is mentioned or cited, how it is described, and which competitors appear. It can be done by hand or with an AI visibility tool. ## Q ### Query fan-out Query fan-out is a technique Google uses in AI Overviews and AI Mode, [issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) to build one answer. It means a page can be cited for a sub-question even if it doesn’t rank for the main query. ## R ### Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) Retrieval-augmented generation is an approach where an AI system retrieves relevant documents first and then writes an answer grounded in them. It was formalized in a [2020 paper by Lewis and colleagues](https://arxiv.org/abs/2005.11401) and underpins most AI search products. ### robots.txt robots.txt is a text file at the root of a website that tells crawlers which parts of the site they may access. For AEO, check that it allows search crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot. ## S ### Schema markup Schema markup, also called structured data, is code that describes a page’s content in a standard format from Schema.org, such as Organization, Article, or FAQPage. Google asks that structured data match the visible content on the page. ### Share of voice In AI search, share of voice is your brand’s share of mentions or citations compared with competitors across the same set of prompts. It shows whether you are gaining or losing ground in AI answers, not just whether you appear. ### Snippet controls Snippet controls are the nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, and noindex directives that limit what Google can show from a page. Google says these controls [also limit what appears in its AI features](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), so check that none are set by accident. ## T ### Training data Training data is the text and other content used to build an AI model before it is released. Training crawlers such as GPTBot collect it. Being represented accurately in training data shapes what a model knows about your brand when it answers without searching. ## Z ### Zero-click search A zero-click search is one where the person gets their answer on the results page and doesn’t click through to a website. A [Pew Research Center study](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/) found users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when a Google AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when it didn’t. ## Put these terms to work Knowing the vocabulary is the first step. The seven strategies that work are: monitor mentions, ask happy customers for honest reviews, respond to every review, handle complaints quickly, never fake or suppress reviews, own your branded search results, and manage what AI tools say about you.** Reputation now shapes buying decisions in more places than ever, from Google reviews to AI-generated answers. Here is how to manage each one. ## What is reputation management? Reputation management is the ongoing work of shaping how your brand is perceived online. It covers reviews, social media conversations, news coverage, search results for your brand name, and increasingly the answers AI tools give when someone asks about you. The goal is an accurate, positive picture that helps buyers trust you. ## 1. Monitor what people say about you You can’t manage what you don’t see. Set up monitoring so you hear about mentions, reviews, and complaints quickly. - **Google Alerts** for your brand name, key people, and products. It’s free and catches news and web mentions. - **Review platforms** that matter in your industry, such as Google, Yelp, G2, Clutch, or senior living and travel review sites. - **Social listening tools** such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite, or Talkwalker to track mentions and sentiment across social platforms. Decide who checks each source, how often, and who responds. A weekly review with daily alerts works for most brands. ## 2. Ask happy customers for honest reviews The best defense against a few bad reviews is a steady flow of genuine ones. Ask customers at the moments they’re most satisfied, such as after a successful project, a smooth move-in, or a five-star support interaction. Make it easy with a direct link. Keep it honest. Google’s [Maps content policy](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114) says a review should “reflect an actual experience with a business, and be genuine and unbiased.” In the U.S., the Federal Trade Commission’s [final rule on fake reviews](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/08/federal-trade-commission-announces-final-rule-banning-fake-reviews-testimonials), announced in August 2024, prohibits offering compensation or incentives conditioned on a review expressing a particular sentiment, positive or negative. Ask everyone, not just the people you expect to be happy. ## 3. Respond to every review Responding shows future customers that you listen. Thank people for positive reviews, and answer negative reviews quickly, calmly, and specifically. A simple structure for negative reviews: 1. Thank them and acknowledge the problem without arguing. 2. Apologize for their experience where it’s appropriate. 3. Explain briefly what you’re doing to fix it. 4. Move the details offline with a direct contact. Never share private details in a public reply, and never respond in anger. The reply is written for the next customer reading it as much as for the reviewer. ## 4. Handle complaints on social media quickly Social complaints are public and can spread fast. Reply publicly within hours, not days, to show you’re on it, then move to direct messages or a phone call to resolve the details. Once it’s resolved, a short public follow-up shows others that you followed through. Have a simple escalation plan for serious issues, such as safety concerns or viral posts, so the right people get involved immediately. ## 5. Never fake or suppress reviews Shortcuts backfire. The FTC’s final rule bans several practices outright, including: - Fake reviews and testimonials, including AI-generated ones or ones from people with no real experience with the business. - Buying positive or negative reviews. - Undisclosed reviews from company insiders. - Using unfounded legal threats, intimidation, or false accusations to prevent or remove negative reviews. - Buying fake social media followers or views. Posting fake praise from fake accounts, sometimes called astroturfing, also violates platform rules and destroys trust when it’s discovered. ## 6. Own your branded search results When someone searches your company name, the first page of results is your reputation. Fill it with accurate, helpful pages you control or influence: - Your website, with clear About, Results, and Contact pages. - Complete, consistent profiles on LinkedIn, review sites, and industry directories. - A Google Business Profile if you serve customers at a location. - Case studies, articles, and press coverage that show your expertise. Strong [SEO](https://sentic.io/seo/) helps these pages outrank old or inaccurate results. ## 7. Manage what AI tools say about you Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews about brands before they contact them. These tools pull from your website, reviews, news, and third-party sites. If the information is thin, outdated, or inconsistent, the answer may be wrong. - Ask AI tools the questions your buyers ask about you, and record what they say. - Keep your company description, services, and details identical everywhere they appear. - Publish clear answers to common questions on your own site, including pricing approach and policies. - Earn mentions on the review sites and publications AI tools cite in your industry. This practice is called answer engine optimization. Our [AEO guide](https://sentic.io/blog/answer-engine-optimization/) covers it in full. ## How do you measure your reputation? | Metric | What it tells you | |---|---| | Average star rating | Overall satisfaction on key review platforms | | Review volume and recency | Whether you have enough fresh reviews to be credible | | Response rate and time | How well you engage with reviewers | | Sentiment of mentions | How people talk about you across social and news | | Branded search results | What buyers see when they search your name | | AI answer accuracy | Whether AI tools describe your brand correctly | ## Frequently asked questions ### What is reputation management? Reputation management is the ongoing work of monitoring and shaping how a brand is perceived online, including reviews, social media, news, branded search results, and AI-generated answers. The goal is an accurate, positive picture that helps potential customers trust the brand. ### How do you respond to a negative review? Respond quickly and calmly. Thank the reviewer, acknowledge the problem, apologize where appropriate, explain what you’re doing to fix it, and offer a direct contact to resolve details privately. Never argue or share private information in a public reply. ### Can you offer incentives for reviews? Be careful. The FTC’s final rule on fake reviews prohibits incentives conditioned on a review expressing a particular sentiment, positive or negative. Review platforms also have their own rules, and Google says reviews should be genuine and unbiased. Check each platform’s policy before offering anything. ### How does AI affect brand reputation? AI tools now answer questions about brands directly, pulling from websites, reviews, and news. Inaccurate or inconsistent information can lead to wrong answers. Keeping your brand facts consistent and publishing clear answers on your own site helps AI describe you correctly. ## Protect and grow your reputation Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. Modern chatbots built on large language models understand everyday language far better than older scripted bots. They work best on clear, repeatable conversations, and they need approved information, an easy path to a person, and regular review to stay accurate.** This guide explains how chatbots evolved, the main types, where they help marketing, where they fall short, and how to launch one well. ## What is a chatbot? A chatbot is software that holds a conversation with people through text or voice. In marketing, chatbots usually sit on a website, in a messaging app, or on social media, where they answer questions and guide visitors to a next step such as booking a call or finding a product. ## How have chatbots evolved? Chatbots have moved from fixed scripts to systems that understand and generate natural language. One of the earliest was ELIZA, built at MIT in the 1960s, which matched keywords to scripted replies. For decades, most business chatbots worked the same way: follow a decision tree and offer buttons. Two shifts changed that. First, natural language processing let bots recognize what a person meant, not just the exact words. Then large language models, the technology behind ChatGPT, made it possible for bots to write fluent answers to questions they had never seen. ChatGPT’s public launch in late 2022 brought this style of conversation to the mainstream. ## What are the main types of chatbots? | Type | How it works | Best for | Main limit | |---|---|---|---| | Rule-based (scripted) | Follows a fixed decision tree with buttons or keywords | Simple, predictable tasks like routing or FAQs | Breaks when a question falls outside the script | | Intent-based AI | Uses natural language processing to match a question to a known intent | Customer service with a defined set of topics | Needs training data for each intent | | Generative AI | Uses a large language model to write answers, often grounded in your own content | Open-ended questions and product guidance | Can produce confident errors without guardrails | | Hybrid | Combines scripted flows for key tasks with AI for open questions | Most marketing use cases | More setup and testing | ## How do chatbots help marketing? Chatbots help most when visitors have questions that block them from taking the next step. Common uses: - **Lead qualification.** Ask a few questions, such as budget, timeline, or location, then route qualified leads to sales or a booking calendar. - **Appointment and tour booking.** Senior living communities, clinics, and service businesses can let visitors book without waiting for office hours. - **Product guidance.** Help shoppers compare options and find the right product, like a knowledgeable store associate. - **Customer support.** Answer common questions about orders, policies, and accounts, so the support team handles fewer repeat tickets. - **After-hours coverage.** Capture leads and answer questions at night and on weekends. Chatbots also connect to personalization. A bot that knows which page someone is on or which ad they clicked can tailor its first question. Read more in our guide to [digital marketing personalization](https://sentic.io/blog/achieving-success-with-digital-marketing-personalization/). ## What are the risks and limits of chatbots? The biggest risk is a chatbot that gives wrong answers with confidence. Generative AI can invent details, a problem known as hallucination. Other common problems: - **Dead ends.** Visitors get stuck in a loop with no way to reach a person. - **Off-brand or off-policy answers.** The bot promises a discount, a price, or a policy that doesn’t exist. - **Privacy issues.** Visitors share personal or sensitive information that the bot isn’t set up to handle properly. - **Annoyance.** Pop-ups that open too soon or interrupt reading drive people away. Ground the bot in approved content, limit what it can promise, tell visitors they’re talking to a bot, and always offer a human handoff. ## How do you launch a chatbot that works? 1. **Pick one job.** Start with a single goal, such as booking tours or answering pricing questions. 2. **Gather approved answers.** Pull from your FAQs, policies, product information, and sales team’s most common questions. 3. **Design the handoff.** Decide when the bot passes a conversation to a person, and how fast someone responds. 4. **Connect your tools.** Send leads to your CRM and track conversions in GA4 so you can measure results. 5. **Test before launch.** Try tricky, off-topic, and sensitive questions to see how the bot behaves. 6. **Review conversations weekly.** Fix wrong answers, add missing information, and tighten the flows that lose people. ## How do you measure chatbot success? | Metric | What it shows | |---|---| | Leads or bookings from chat | Whether the bot drives business results | | Resolution rate | Share of conversations the bot handles without a person | | Handoff rate and response time | How often people need a human, and how quickly they get one | | Customer satisfaction | Whether visitors found the conversation helpful | | Drop-off points | Where conversations stall, which tells you what to fix | ## What’s next for chatbots in marketing? The bigger shift is that buyers now use AI assistants outside your website. People ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini which product or provider to choose before they ever reach your site. Your own chatbot answers questions on your site; [answer engine optimization](https://sentic.io/blog/answer-engine-optimization/) makes sure those outside assistants describe and recommend you correctly. For a broader look at AI in marketing, read [5 ways AI is changing digital marketing](https://sentic.io/blog/explore-how-ai-revolutionizes-digital-marketing-5-ways/). ## Frequently asked questions ### What are the main types of chatbots? The main types are rule-based chatbots that follow fixed scripts, intent-based AI chatbots that use natural language processing, generative AI chatbots built on large language models, and hybrid bots that combine scripted flows with AI. Most marketing teams get the best results from a hybrid approach. ### What is the biggest problem with chatbots? The biggest problem is wrong or made-up answers delivered with confidence, especially from generative AI bots. The fix is to ground the bot in approved information, limit what it can promise, review conversations regularly, and always offer an easy way to reach a person. ### Do chatbots really help marketing? Yes, when they have a clear job. Chatbots help most with lead qualification, appointment booking, product guidance, and after-hours questions. They work poorly when they block people from reaching a human or try to handle complex, sensitive conversations alone. ### How do I know if my chatbot is working? Track leads or bookings from chat, the share of conversations resolved without a person, handoff speed, customer satisfaction, and where conversations drop off. Tie chat conversions to your CRM and GA4 so you can see the revenue the bot influences. ## Turn conversations into customers Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. Each one saves time or improves results, but each also needs human judgment on strategy, accuracy, and brand voice.** Here is what each change means in practice, and the three places we still wouldn’t trust AI without a person in the loop. ## 1. AI is changing how buyers find brands Buyers now ask AI tools questions and get written answers that name a few sources and brands. Google shows AI Overviews on many searches, and tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini answer research questions directly. If your brand isn’t in those answers, you can miss the buyer entirely. Fewer clicks reach websites as a result. A [Pew Research Center study](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/) found Google users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when it didn’t. **What to do:** keep strong SEO as the foundation, then structure content so AI systems can quote it, with direct answers, clear headings, tables, and original data. Our [guide to answer engine optimization](https://sentic.io/blog/answer-engine-optimization/) covers the full approach, and [AEO vs SEO](https://sentic.io/blog/aeo-vs-seo/) explains how the two fit together. ## 2. AI automates ad bidding and targeting Ad platforms now use machine learning to set bids, find audiences, and choose where ads appear. Google’s Performance Max and Smart Bidding, and Meta’s Advantage+ campaigns, adjust thousands of signals in real time, which is more than any person can manage by hand. That shifts the marketer’s job. Instead of adjusting bids, you feed the system good inputs and check its work: - **Accurate conversion tracking.** The system optimizes toward whatever you tell it is a conversion. Bad data trains it to chase the wrong results. - **Strong creative assets.** Automated campaigns mix and match your images, videos, and headlines, so their quality sets the ceiling. - **Clear goals and guardrails.** Set target costs or returns, exclude audiences that don’t fit, and review where spend goes. See our guide to [Performance Max campaigns](https://sentic.io/blog/optimizing-google-ads-with-performance-max-campaigns/) and our [paid search management](https://sentic.io/paid-search/) services. ## 3. AI speeds up content and creative production Generative AI can draft outlines, write first versions of copy, produce ad variations, resize creative for each platform, and summarize research. Used well, it frees time for the work that needs a person: strategy, original ideas, and expert insight. Google’s [guidance on generative AI content](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/using-gen-ai-content) is clear on the risks. It says using AI “to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate Google’s spam policy on scaled content abuse,” and that it is “critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing.” **What to do:** use AI for speed, and add what it can’t: first-hand experience, original data, and a named expert who stands behind the content. ## 4. AI predicts customer behavior Analytics tools now use machine learning to predict what customers will do next. GA4’s [predictive metrics](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9846734) include purchase probability, churn probability, and predicted revenue. Google notes these require enough data, including at least 1,000 returning users who triggered the predicted action and 1,000 who did not, within a recent window. Predictions help you act earlier: - Build ad audiences of people likely to buy soon. - Send retention offers to customers likely to churn. - Focus budget on segments with the highest predicted revenue. Our [analytics team](https://sentic.io/data-analytics/) sets up the GA4 tracking these models depend on. ## 5. AI handles customer conversations at scale AI chatbots and assistants can answer common questions, qualify leads, and book appointments around the clock. Newer chatbots built on large language models understand everyday language far better than older scripted bots, so they can handle more conversations without a person. They still need limits. Give the bot approved information to work from, make it easy to reach a person, and review conversations regularly. Our guide to [chatbots in digital marketing](https://sentic.io/blog/chatbots-transforming-digital-marketing-and-future-trends/) covers how to set one up well. ## Where should people stay in the loop? AI is fast, but it doesn’t know your business, your customers, or your standards. These are the three areas where we always keep a person in charge: 1. **Strategy and positioning.** Deciding who you serve, what makes you different, and where to compete takes judgment that AI can’t supply. 2. **Facts, claims, and compliance.** AI can produce confident errors. Every statistic, product claim, and regulated statement needs a human check. 3. **Brand voice and final creative.** AI drafts can sound generic. A person should shape the story and approve what goes out. For more on balancing automation with judgment, read [Balancing Creativity and Data in Marketing](https://sentic.io/blog/balancing-creativity-and-data-in-marketing-art-or-science/). ## Frequently asked questions ### How is AI changing digital marketing? AI is changing how buyers find brands through AI search, automating ad bidding and targeting, speeding up content and creative work, predicting customer behavior, and handling customer conversations. The biggest shift is that marketers spend less time on manual tasks and more on strategy, data quality, and creative. ### Will AI replace digital marketers? AI replaces tasks more than roles. It handles bidding, first drafts, and routine reporting well. People are still needed for strategy, positioning, original ideas, fact-checking, and the judgment calls that decide whether marketing actually works. ### Is AI-generated content bad for SEO? Not by itself. Google’s guidance says AI can help research and structure content, but mass-producing pages without adding value may violate its spam policy on scaled content abuse. Fact-check AI drafts and add original insight before publishing. ### How do I get my brand into AI search answers? Make sure AI crawlers can access your site, keep your pages indexed, write answer-first content with original data, and earn mentions on sites AI tools trust. This practice is called answer engine optimization, or AEO. ## Put AI to work in your marketing Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. A framework for getting both right. **Content:** **Digital marketing personalization means changing the message, offer, or experience based on what you know about a person or group. It works best when you start with segments, such as industry, location, or stage in the buying journey, before trying one-to-one personalization. The foundation is first-party data that customers share with you, used with their consent and tested against a control group.** This guide covers where personalization pays off, how to start without a big tech stack, and how to measure whether it works. ## What is personalization in digital marketing? Personalization is tailoring marketing to the person seeing it. It can be as simple as using a first name in an email, or as advanced as a website that changes its headline based on the visitor’s industry. The goal is relevance: showing people what they need at the moment they need it. Personalization happens at three levels: - **Segment level.** Different messages for groups, such as new vs returning visitors, or families vs professionals. - **Behavior level.** Messages triggered by actions, such as an abandoned cart email or a follow-up after a pricing page visit. - **Individual level.** Recommendations or content based on one person’s history, such as product suggestions based on past purchases. ## Why does personalization matter? Personalization matters because generic marketing gets ignored. When a message matches what someone is trying to do, they are more likely to read it, click, and buy. It also respects their time, which builds trust and loyalty. The payoff shows up in email and lifecycle marketing first. In our work with American Farm Company, a focused email program produced a [98% lift in email revenue in 90 days](https://sentic.io/results/american-farm-company-afc/). ## Where should you start with personalization? Start with segments, not individuals. Segment-level personalization is easier to build, easier to test, and works long before you have enough data for one-to-one experiences. Pick one channel and one segment, prove the lift, then expand. Good first projects: 1. **Welcome emails by signup source.** Someone who downloaded a guide needs a different first email than someone who requested a demo. 2. **Abandoned cart or abandoned form follow-ups.** These are triggered by clear intent and usually earn some of the highest returns in email. 3. **Landing pages by ad audience.** Match the page headline to the ad and the audience that clicked it. 4. **Returning visitor messages.** Show returning visitors a next step, such as a case study or a booking link, instead of the same introduction. 5. **Industry-specific case studies.** Put the most relevant proof in front of each audience. ## What data do you need? You need first-party data: information people share with you directly or that you collect on your own site and apps. It is more reliable than third-party data, and you control it. | Data type | Examples | How to collect it | |---|---|---| | Declared data | Industry, role, goals, preferences | Forms, surveys, quizzes, preference centers | | Behavioral data | Pages viewed, emails opened, products browsed | GA4, your email platform, your CRM | | Transactional data | Purchases, order value, renewal dates | Ecommerce platform, CRM, billing system | | Contextual data | Location, device, time of day, traffic source | Analytics and ad platforms | Ask only for what you’ll use, explain why you’re asking, and honor consent choices. Personalization that feels invasive does more harm than none at all. ## Which channels work best for personalization? ### Email and SMS Email and SMS are the easiest places to personalize, because you know who you’re talking to. Use triggered messages, segmented newsletters, and product or content recommendations. Our [email and SMS marketing](https://sentic.io/email-sms/) work starts here. ### Website Personalize headlines, calls to action, and proof points by traffic source, location, or returning visitor status. Exit-intent offers, shown when someone is about to leave, can turn some lost visits into leads if the offer is relevant. ### Paid media Ad platforms let you build audiences from your own customer lists and site visitors. Use them to show different creative to new prospects, returning visitors, and existing customers. Telling a story across several ads in order, called [ad sequencing](https://sentic.io/blog/revolutionizing-digital-marketing-with-ad-sequencing/), is one form of personalization. ### Chatbots and AI assistants A website chatbot can answer questions in context and route people to the right next step. See our guide to [chatbots in digital marketing](https://sentic.io/blog/chatbots-transforming-digital-marketing-and-future-trends/) for where they help and where they don’t. ## How do you measure personalization? Test personalization against a control group. Show the personalized version to most of a segment and the standard version to a small holdout, then compare conversion rate, revenue per visitor, or revenue per email. Without a control, you can’t tell whether personalization caused the lift. - Run one test at a time per segment, so results are clear. - Give tests enough traffic and time to reach a reliable result. - Track the outcome you care about, such as leads or revenue, not just clicks. - Keep the winners, retire the losers, and move to the next segment. Testing tools such as Optimizely and VWO handle website experiments, and most email platforms include A/B testing. Our [analytics team](https://sentic.io/data-analytics/) can set up the tracking that ties each test to revenue. ## Common personalization mistakes - **Starting with one-to-one.** Individual personalization needs a lot of data. Segments work sooner. - **Personalizing without a reason.** A first name in a subject line isn’t a strategy. Change the offer or content, not just the greeting. - **Using data people didn’t expect you to have.** It feels intrusive and erodes trust. - **Skipping the control group.** Without one, you can’t prove what worked. - **Letting segments go stale.** Update rules as customers move through the journey. ## Frequently asked questions ### What is personalization in digital marketing? Personalization in digital marketing is tailoring messages, offers, and experiences to a person or group based on data such as their behavior, location, or stage in the buying journey. The goal is to make every interaction more relevant, which raises engagement and conversions. ### Why is personalization important? Generic marketing is easy to ignore. Personalization shows people messages that match what they are trying to do, which makes them more likely to engage and buy. It also builds trust, because customers feel the brand understands their needs. ### What is the difference between segmentation and personalization? Segmentation groups people with shared traits, such as industry or purchase history. Personalization is what you do with those groups, or with individuals, by changing the content they see. Segmentation is usually the first step toward effective personalization. ### How do you personalize marketing without third-party cookies? Use first-party data: information customers share through forms, purchases, and their activity on your site and emails. Combine it with contextual signals such as location and traffic source. This data is more accurate and fully under your control. ## Make personalization pay Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. The strategies that work in 2026 tie every video to a stage of the buyer journey, favor short videos for reach and longer ones for consideration, make videos findable in search, and track views through to leads and sales.** This guide walks through the eight steps Sentic uses to build video programs for clients, from setting goals to measuring return. ## Why does video marketing still matter in 2026? Video is now a standard part of the marketing mix, and buyers expect it. [Wyzowl’s State of Video Marketing 2026](https://wyzowl.com/video-marketing-statistics/), based on a survey of 266 marketers and consumers in late 2025, found: - **91%** of businesses use video as a marketing tool. - **82%** of marketers say video has given them a good return on investment. - **85%** of people have been convinced to buy by watching a video. - **63%** of people would most like to learn about a product by watching a short video. - **63%** of video marketers have used AI to create or edit video, up from 51% the year before. The same report found that 17% of marketers don’t track what they spend on video. That gap is why the measurement step below matters as much as the creative. ## Step 1: Tie every video to a business goal Start with the outcome, not the format. Decide what each video should change: awareness, consideration, conversion, or retention. The goal determines the format, the length, the channel, and the metric you’ll judge it on. | Goal | Formats that fit | Metric to watch | |---|---|---| | Awareness | Short social videos, brand stories, video ads | Reach, view rate, branded search growth | | Consideration | Explainers, product demos, how-to videos, webinars | Watch time, completion rate, site visits | | Conversion | Customer stories, testimonials, offer-driven ads | Leads, sales, cost per acquisition | | Retention | Onboarding, tutorials, support videos | Product adoption, repeat purchase, fewer support tickets | ## Step 2: Know exactly who you’re making videos for Pick one audience per video and build it around their questions. Pull those questions from sales calls, customer service tickets, reviews, search queries in Google Search Console, and comments on your social posts. A video that answers a real question in the first few seconds will outperform a polished video that talks about your company. ## Step 3: Choose the right video formats Most brands need a mix of short videos for reach and longer videos for depth. The most useful formats: - **Short-form social videos.** Vertical clips for Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and LinkedIn. Lead with the hook and design for sound off with captions. - **Explainer videos.** Show what you do and how it works in plain terms. Wyzowl found 96% of people have watched an explainer video to learn about a product or service. - **Product demos.** Walk through real use, including the details buyers ask about before they commit. - **Customer stories and testimonials.** Let customers describe the problem and the result in their own words. - **How-to and educational videos.** Answer the questions your buyers search for. These keep earning views long after they’re published. - **Webinars and live streams.** Host them on Google Meet, Zoom, YouTube Live, or LinkedIn Live, then cut the recording into shorter clips. - **Behind-the-scenes videos.** Show your team, process, and culture to build trust. ## Step 4: Pick channels based on where your buyers watch Publish where your audience already spends time, and adapt each video to the platform rather than posting the same cut everywhere. In Wyzowl’s 2026 survey, video marketers most often published on YouTube (82%), LinkedIn (70%), Instagram (69%), and Facebook (68%), with webinars at 56%. | Channel | Best for | |---|---| | YouTube | Search-driven how-to content, demos, and long-form education | | LinkedIn | B2B thought leadership, company news, and webinars | | Instagram and Facebook | Consumer brands, short-form stories, and paid social | | TikTok | Short, native-feeling content and reaching younger audiences | | Your website | Product pages, landing pages, and dedicated video pages that can rank in Google | | Email | Onboarding, nurture sequences, and customer updates | For TikTok specifically, see our [TikTok Ads guide](https://sentic.io/blog/ultimate-tiktok-ads-guide-for-professional-digital-marketers/). ## Step 5: Plan production you can keep up with Consistency beats one big production. Choose a publishing rhythm you can sustain for a year, then build a simple system around it: 1. **Batch filming.** Record several videos in one session to cut setup time. 2. **Film once, cut many.** Turn one webinar or long interview into a full-length video, several short clips, quote graphics, and a blog post. 3. **Add captions to everything.** Many people watch social video with the sound off. 4. **Use AI for the busywork.** Captions, rough cuts, resizing for each platform, and first-draft scripts. Keep a person in charge of the story and the final edit. 5. **Match production value to the job.** A phone-filmed expert answer can outperform a studio ad on social. Save bigger budgets for brand films and paid campaigns. ## Step 6: Make your videos findable in Google Video can appear in Google’s search results, Video mode, and key moments, but only if Google can index it. Google’s [video SEO best practices](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/video) set the requirements: - **Use an indexed watch page.** Google says “the watch page must be indexed” and “the video must be embedded on a watch page.” - **Give each important video its own page.** Google recommends a dedicated watch page for each video, with a title and description unique to that video. A blog post with an embedded video can still show up, but it isn’t treated as a watch page. - **Provide a stable thumbnail.** The video needs “a valid thumbnail that’s available at a stable URL.” - **Add structured data or a video sitemap.** Google supports VideoObject structured data, video sitemaps, and Open Graph tags to describe your videos. - **Add a summary and transcript.** Text on the page helps search engines and AI answer engines understand what the video covers. On YouTube, write descriptive titles, add chapters, and link back to the related page on your site. Video is one part of a broader search program; our [SEO services](https://sentic.io/seo/) cover the rest. ## Step 7: Put paid media behind your best videos Organic reach alone rarely gets a video in front of enough of the right people. Promote videos that already perform well organically through [paid social](https://sentic.io/social/), YouTube ads, and [programmatic and connected TV](https://sentic.io/programmatic/). Then retarget people who watched most of a video with a stronger offer. Telling a story across several ads in order, known as [ad sequencing](https://sentic.io/blog/revolutionizing-digital-marketing-with-ad-sequencing/), works especially well with video. ## Step 8: Measure video from view to lead Views show reach, not results. Connect video engagement to leads and sales so you know which videos earn their budget. - **Turn on GA4 video tracking.** GA4’s [enhanced measurement](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9216061) records video\_start, video\_progress (at 10%, 25%, 50%, and 75%), and video\_complete for embedded YouTube videos that have JS API support enabled. - **Use platform metrics for creative decisions.** Hook rate, average watch time, and completion rate show which openings and lengths hold attention. - **Tag every link.** Use UTM parameters on links in video descriptions, social posts, and ads so traffic is attributed correctly. - **Report on outcomes.** Compare conversion rates for visitors who watched a video against those who didn’t, and track leads and revenue by campaign. Our [GA4 guide](https://sentic.io/blog/embrace-ga4-boost-your-digital-marketing-strategy-today/) covers the setup, and our [analytics team](https://sentic.io/data-analytics/) can build dashboards that tie video to revenue. For how to balance creative instinct with performance data, read [Balancing Creativity and Data in Marketing](https://sentic.io/blog/balancing-creativity-and-data-in-marketing-art-or-science/). ## Common video marketing mistakes - **Making videos without a goal.** If you can’t name the metric a video should move, you can’t tell whether it worked. - **Burying the point.** Long logo intros and slow openings lose viewers before the message arrives. - **Posting one cut everywhere.** A horizontal brand video rarely works as a vertical social clip without re-editing. - **Skipping captions.** Videos watched with the sound off lose the message. - **Hosting video only on social platforms.** Without a watch page on your own site, your video does little for your search visibility. - **Not tracking spend or results.** Wyzowl found 17% of marketers don’t even track what they spend on video. ## Frequently asked questions ### How long should a marketing video be? Match length to the goal and platform. Short videos work best for social reach and ads, where the hook has to land in the first few seconds. Explainers, demos, and how-to videos can run longer because viewers chose to learn. Use your own completion-rate data to find the right length. ### Is video good for SEO? Yes, when it’s set up correctly. Google can show videos in search results, Video mode, and key moments if the video is embedded on an indexed watch page with a stable thumbnail. Adding a unique title, description, transcript, and VideoObject structured data helps Google understand and surface it. ### Do I need a professional video production team? Not for everything. Phone-filmed videos from real experts often perform well on social media. Professional production is worth it for brand films, flagship explainers, and paid campaigns where quality affects trust. Many brands combine both: a few produced pieces and a steady flow of simpler videos. ### How do I measure the ROI of video marketing? Track spend, then connect video engagement to outcomes. Turn on GA4 video events, tag every link with UTM parameters, and compare leads, sales, and cost per acquisition for campaigns and visitors that include video. Platform metrics like completion rate guide creative choices, but revenue decides ROI. ## Build a video program that drives growth Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. Here’s the operating model. **Content:** **Marketing is both an art and a science, and the best results come from using each where it is strongest. Creativity produces the ideas, stories, and visuals that earn attention and build a brand people remember. Data decides which of those ideas work, who should see them, and where the budget goes. Teams that rely on only one side either produce beautiful work that can’t prove its value, or efficient campaigns nobody remembers.** This guide breaks down what each side contributes, where they clash, and the five-step process Sentic uses to let data inform creative work without flattening it. ## What is the art of marketing? The art of marketing is the creative work that makes people notice, feel something, and remember a brand. It covers positioning, storytelling, copywriting, design, video, and the overall personality of the brand. Good creative work gives people a reason to stop scrolling and a reason to choose you over a competitor that sells something similar. Creative strengths include: - **Differentiation.** A distinct voice and look that competitors can’t copy overnight. - **Emotion and memory.** Stories and visuals that people recall when they’re ready to buy. - **Big ideas.** Concepts that data alone would never suggest, because they haven’t been tried yet. ## What is the science of marketing? The science of marketing is the analytical work that measures performance and turns results into decisions. It covers audience research, tracking, attribution, testing, and budget allocation. Done well, it shows which channels, audiences, and messages produce revenue, so you can put more money behind what works and stop funding what doesn’t. Analytical strengths include: - **Measurement.** Clean conversion tracking in tools like GA4, so every channel reports against the same goals. Our [GA4 guide](https://sentic.io/blog/embrace-ga4-boost-your-digital-marketing-strategy-today/) covers the setup. - **Attribution.** Understanding which touchpoints contribute to a sale, covered in our post on [attribution modeling](https://sentic.io/blog/maximizing-marketing-roi-with-attribution-modelling/). - **Testing.** Controlled experiments that replace opinions with evidence. - **Efficiency.** Bidding, targeting, and budget decisions based on cost per lead and return on ad spend. ## Why do you need both creativity and data? Each side fails in predictable ways on its own. Creative work without data can’t show what it returns, so it is the first budget cut when times get tight. Data without creativity optimizes small gains in campaigns that look like everyone else’s, and it can only test the ideas someone thought of in the first place. | | Creativity without data | Data without creativity | |---|---|---| | Typical result | Memorable work with unclear results | Efficient campaigns that blend in | | Main risk | Spending on ideas that don’t connect, with no way to tell | Optimizing toward a ceiling because the creative is stale | | What gets measured | Opinions and awards | Short-term clicks and conversions only | | Long-term brand | Strong but hard to justify | Weak, because every ad looks like a competitor’s | Together, they cover each other’s gaps: creativity supplies new options, and data picks the winners and scales them. ## Where do creativity and data clash? The friction usually comes from process, not people. These are the conflicts we see most often: - **Short-term metrics vs long-term brand.** Click-through rate rewards what gets an immediate response. Brand-building work pays off over months, so judging it on next-day clicks undervalues it. - **Testing too little or too late.** Creative teams finish one polished concept, then data teams are asked to prove it worked. There’s nothing to compare it against. - **Bad data treated as truth.** Broken tracking or a sample that’s too small can kill a good idea. Check the measurement before trusting the result. - **Briefs without insight.** A brief that lists features but no customer insight forces creatives to guess. - **Dashboards without context.** Analysts report what happened without explaining why, so the creative team can’t learn from it. ## How do you balance creativity and data? A 5-step process Use data before the creative work starts and after it launches, and give creatives room in between. This is the loop we run on client campaigns across [paid search](https://sentic.io/paid-search/) and [paid and organic social](https://sentic.io/social/). ### Step 1: Start with customer insight Pull what the data already knows: search queries, reviews, sales call notes, top-converting pages, and audience behavior in GA4. Turn it into one or two plain-language insights, such as “families researching memory care want to know what a normal day looks like.” Insight gives creative work a target without dictating the answer. ### Step 2: Write a brief with a hypothesis State what the campaign should change and how you’ll know. For example: “Showing real residents in daily activities will lift tour requests compared with facility photos.” A testable brief gets creative and analytical teams aiming at the same outcome. ### Step 3: Produce distinct variations Ask for two or three clearly different concepts, not one idea in three colors. Vary the hook, the format, or the emotional angle. Distinct options teach you something whichever one wins. ### Step 4: Test with clean measurement Run a controlled test using the experiment tools built into the ad platforms, with conversion tracking verified before launch. Give the test enough budget and time to reach a reliable result, and judge it on the metric in the brief, not whichever number looks best afterward. ### Step 5: Scale the winner and keep room for bold ideas Move budget toward what wins and share the results with the creative team, including why you think it won. Then protect a portion of spend for new, unproven ideas. Many teams use a rule of thumb such as 70% on proven work, 20% on improvements, and 10% on experiments. The exact split matters less than making testing a habit. ## Which metrics show the value of each side? | Goal | Metrics to watch | |---|---| | Attention (creative) | Thumb-stop rate, video view rate, engagement rate, branded search volume | | Memory and brand (creative) | Brand lift studies, direct and branded traffic over time, share of voice | | Response (both) | Click-through rate, landing page conversion rate | | Efficiency (data) | Cost per lead, cost per acquisition, return on ad spend | | Business impact (both) | Revenue, pipeline, customer lifetime value | Report creative and performance metrics side by side. When branded search and direct traffic rise after a campaign, that is the creative work showing up in the numbers. ## How is AI changing the balance? AI tools make it cheap to produce variations and fast to analyze results, which pushes more of the work toward the science side. That makes the creative side more valuable, not less. Campaign types like Google’s [Performance Max](https://sentic.io/blog/optimizing-google-ads-with-performance-max-campaigns/) mix and match the assets you provide, so the quality and range of those assets set the ceiling on results. And when every competitor can generate competent ads in seconds, a distinct idea is what stands out. Use AI to speed up research, drafts, and reporting. Keep human judgment on strategy, insight, and the final creative call. Techniques like [ad sequencing](https://sentic.io/blog/revolutionizing-digital-marketing-with-ad-sequencing/) and [personalization](https://sentic.io/blog/achieving-success-with-digital-marketing-personalization/) work best when strong creative and clean data are both in place. ## Frequently asked questions ### Is marketing an art or a science? Both. The art of marketing creates the ideas, stories, and design that earn attention and build a brand. The science measures what works, targets the right audiences, and allocates budget. Effective marketing uses creativity to generate options and data to choose and scale the best ones. ### How do you use data without killing creativity? Use data to shape the brief and judge the results, not to dictate the idea. Give creative teams a clear customer insight and a goal, ask for distinct concepts, test them fairly, and share what you learn. Protect some budget for bold, untested ideas. ### What should creative and analytics teams share? They should share one brief with a testable goal, agreed success metrics, verified conversion tracking, and a regular review where results are explained, not just reported. When both teams see why something worked, the next round of creative improves. ### How much budget should go to testing new creative? There is no universal number. A common rule of thumb is the 70/20/10 split: about 70% on proven work, 20% on improvements, and 10% on new experiments. Adjust based on how quickly your ads fatigue and how much volume you need to reach reliable test results. ## Put creativity and data to work together Sentic is a national digital marketing agency specializing in AI search optimization, SEO, paid search, paid and organic social, and websites. That means showing up when adult children and older adults search for care, answering their questions about levels of care, cost, and daily life, and following up until they are ready to move. The decision is personal, the buyers are often a family, and ad platforms limit how you can target. Marketing has to work within all three. Ad targeting rules summarized from [Google’s personalized advertising policy](https://support.google.com/adspolicy/answer/143465) and [Meta’s Special Ad Categories documentation](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/marketing-api/audiences/special-ad-category/). Confirm with your counsel which rules apply to your ads. ### Two audiences share one decision Older adults and their adult children research together, often from different cities. Your website, listings, and ads have to answer both sets of questions. ### Sales cycles are long and emotional A move often follows a health change or a hard family conversation. Prospects need education, reassurance, and patient follow-up, not pressure. ### Ad targeting is restricted In the U.S., Google does not allow age, gender, or ZIP code targeting for housing ads. Meta’s housing Special Ad Category fixes ages at 18 to 65+ and requires at least a 15-mile radius around a location. Campaigns have to win on search intent, geography, and creative. ### Local and AI visibility shape the shortlist Families compare communities in Google Maps, on review sites, and in AI answers. Accurate listings, strong reviews, and clear care and pricing information decide who makes the list. In our [State of AI Visibility study](/blog/state-of-ai-visibility-2026/), AI answers named senior living operators most often but linked to directories for 75% of citations. Health marketing has stricter rules on data and targeting, and patients hold providers to a higher standard of trust. This page is general information, not legal advice. Review tracking and advertising decisions with your compliance team and legal counsel. ### Tracking rules are strict HHS has warned HIPAA-covered entities about tracking technologies that disclose protected health information, especially on authenticated pages such as patient portals. We review tags and forms with your compliance team before campaigns launch. See the [HHS bulletin](https://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/for-professionals/privacy/guidance/hipaa-online-tracking/index.html). ### Ad platforms restrict health targeting Google lists health among the sensitive categories in its [personalized advertising policy](https://support.google.com/adspolicy/answer/143465), and Meta restricts custom conversions that suggest health conditions. Campaigns rely more on search intent, location, and strong creative. ### Trust decides the click Patients look for credentials, reviews, and clear information. Content written or reviewed by qualified clinicians matters for patients, search engines, and AI assistants. ### Local search drives appointments Patients often look for providers near them. Accurate listings, location pages, and reviews for every location and provider help you get found. How we work ## How we grow healthcare organizations. Privacy first, then visibility, then campaigns. 01 ### Review tracking and data flows Audit pixels, forms, and analytics with your compliance team so measurement does not expose patient data. 02 ### Fix your local presence Clean up listings, provider and location pages, and reviews across every location. 03 ### Publish expert-reviewed content Answer patient questions with clinician-reviewed content and structured data that search engines and AI assistants can understand. 04 ### Run compliant campaigns Use search campaigns built on intent and policy-aware social, and measure appointment requests with privacy-safe methods. HHS guidance warns HIPAA-covered entities about tracking technologies that disclose protected health information, especially on authenticated pages such as patient portals, and a federal court vacated part of that guidance in June 2024. Review every tag with your compliance team and legal counsel before using it. How can healthcare providers appear in AI answers?Publish clear, accurate content written or reviewed by qualified clinicians, keep provider and location listings consistent, earn reviews, and use structured data so search engines and AI assistants can understand who you are and what you treat. Do health apps have to follow privacy rules outside HIPAA?Often, yes. In April 2024 the FTC finalized updates to its Health Breach Notification Rule, clarifying that it applies to health apps and similar technologies not covered by HIPAA. [Contact us ](https://sentic.io/contact/) What does an ecommerce marketing agency do?An ecommerce marketing agency grows online store revenue through search, shopping ads, marketplaces like Amazon, social, email, and on-site conversion. The best agencies manage those channels together and measure them against profit and total sales. What is a good ROAS for ecommerce? It depends on your margin. Your break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your profit margin before ad costs, so a store with a 25% margin needs a ROAS of 4 to break even. Set targets by product line from your real margins. Can AI assistants buy products for shoppers?Yes, in some cases. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT in September 2025, starting with U.S. Etsy sellers, and Google began rolling out agentic checkout in Search, including AI Mode, in November 2025. Accurate product data and strong reviews help your products get chosen. Should ecommerce brands sell on Amazon or their own site? Most do both. Amazon captures shoppers who are ready to buy there, while your own store gives you higher margins and the customer relationship. Plan both together and measure total sales and profit across channels. Free growth audit ## Get a free ecommerce marketing audit. Despite steady growth, AFC identified gaps in audience targeting, paid advertising efficiency, and conversion performance. Sentic was engaged to refine their digital strategy across PPC, Shopping, SEO, Paid Social, and Email Marketing, with the goal of increasing revenue and improving return on investment. ## Strategy ### SEO & Website Optimization AFC had a solid site structure but lacked in-depth keyword targeting and on-page optimization. After conducting an in-depth site audit, Sentic resolved technical and content-based SEO issues to improve rankings and user engagement. > A targeted keyword strategy, combined with content enhancements and conversion rate optimization (CRO), created a smoother customer experience while boosting search visibility. ### PPC & Shopping Campaigns AFC’s paid search efforts had been underutilized, limiting their ability to scale revenue effectively. To address this, Sentic implemented advanced tactics beyond brand search, including Shopping campaigns and Performance Max (PMAX) strategies. PMAX campaigns were optimized with high-quality imagery and video assets to drive engagement, while YouTube ads were introduced for brand awareness. ### Paid Social Before Sentic’s involvement, AFC’s paid social strategy was overly reliant on top-of-funnel campaigns, leading to audience fatigue and inefficient spending. We restructured campaigns by: - Expanding audience targeting beyond women to include men and interest-based segments. - Broadening lookalike audiences from 1% to 3-5% for improved reach. - Refreshing creative assets to reduce ad fatigue and improve engagement. - Introducing flash sales and targeted promotions, including a Christmas pajama campaign that significantly boosted holiday revenue. ### Email Marketing AFC wanted to maximize its email performance during peak seasons while ensuring brand consistency and reducing customer confusion. Sentic revamped the email strategy by: - Implementing dynamic product feeds based on browsing and purchase history. - Using smart sending to optimize send times. - Segmenting audiences based on engagement levels. - Redesigning email templates to align with AFC’s website. - Adding countdown timers and disclaimers to improve clarity and urgency. ## Results - **PPC & Shopping:** Shopping campaigns achieved a **3X ROAS**, while PMAX optimizations lifted PPC revenue by **35%** over the previous five months. YouTube Ads drove incremental revenue that fully covered ad costs. - **Paid Social:** Total revenue increased by **26%**, with a **12%** increase in paid social revenue. The Christmas pajama campaign achieved an **AOV nearly double** that of evergreen campaigns. - **Email Marketing:** Revenue from email grew **98% vs. the previous 90 days** and **91% YoY**. Conversion rates increased **77% vs. the previous 90 days** and **52% YoY**. Pop-up form conversion rates surged **88%** during peak holiday weeks. Unsubscribe rates dropped by **23%**, while spam complaints declined by **50%**. > Through a data-driven and performance-focused approach, Sentic helped AFC refine its digital marketing strategy, optimize conversion paths, and drive significant revenue growth across multiple channels. ## Services behind these results This engagement used Sentic’s [SEO services](https://sentic.io/seo/), [paid search management](https://sentic.io/paid-search/), [paid and organic social](https://sentic.io/social/), and [email and SMS marketing](https://sentic.io/email-sms/). Their PPC efforts required optimization to focus on high-quality traffic, SEO needed enhancements to improve rankings and engagement, and email marketing strategies needed refinement to maintain strong inbox placement and drive conversions. ## Strategy To address these challenges, we deployed a multi-channel strategy incorporating SEO, PPC, and email marketing to enhance ASB’s digital footprint and improve lead acquisition. ### SEO Strategy We implemented a tailored SEO approach to improve keyword rankings, drive organic traffic, and enhance user experience. Extensive keyword research identified high-value, long-tail search terms relevant to ASB’s niche. Content was optimized across titles, meta descriptions, and service pages to improve rankings.
